The mom is 12 pounds, the supposed dad is about 20 pound mutt, and according to the mom's last heat is due in 3 weeks. She asked me what to do, and if the mom would survive and I told her I have no idea, talk to your vet. She hasn't gone yet, but does anyone else know of a situation like this where the mom came through alright? I told her to get the dog spayed when all is said and done, if the mom dog had a c-section could they spay her on the spot? Thanks for any advice, I'll print it off and give it to her. Be polite please.

From what it sounds like it was an accident, she didn't purposely mean for this to happen. Yeah, she's going to do everything she can for the pups, shots and worming, she takes really good care of her dog.

12 pounds versus 20 is nothing in the dog world, but she may still have some problems, and your friend does NOT want to deal with a dog trying to give birth at midnight and wind up at an emergency clinic $$$$.

She needs to make contact with a vet NOW. Some vets can abort the fetuses if there's a potential life-threatening situation for the mom, by spaying the female if she isn't too far along. Tell your friend not to get on a Right to Life kick for the pups. They aren't born yet, their brains haven't formed enuff to know what's happening (unlike later, when no one wants them and they're euthanized at a pound) and she obviously can't even manage the mother, much less finding homes for unwanted pups.

Don't know about where you are, but a C-Section is extremely expensive in our area, and our vet doesn't answer the phone once he finally goes home on Saturday. Your friend needs to have communication set up ahead of time. This one litter of puppies may prove to be pretty expensive. Maybe her parents will have learned a lesson about being responsible.

Congrats to YOU for recommending the dog get spayed.

Well, the dog is small so yeah she most likely needs to go to the vet and ask them when the dog is due. They'll probably tell her to come in with the dog around that time and they would give her a C-Section, but I don't know if they can spay her right then. Actually, I don't think that would even be a good idea. But, try really hard to get her to go or call them or something. My neighbor Cinna has been through this before.

Why does she feel the need to breed these dogs anyway? There are a lot of mixed breed pups up for adoption. To breed just for the experience is not cool. Also, the type of dog can cause a problem even with dogs of the same size. Pekes and bull dogs are big headed dogs and females can have complications delivering even when the male is smaller. My Saints can range a 20 to 35 lb. difference. It has been my experience (I am sure others will disagree) but smaller dogs on average have more complications that larger.

well it really depends on the make of the dad as well. if he is big boned then she may have a problem with it but i doubt it. i think she would be fine. nature has a way of dealing with things like that... your roght though she does need to talk to the vet. she could probrably even call and they would tell her...good luck

if she chooses to, they can do an abortion on the pups and fix the dog at the same time. i had the same things happen but mine a weiner dog and thats the only option i had...but they can indeed either do a c section and fix or about the pups and fix....

The general rule of thumb is: the mother's uterus determines the size of the pups before birth. But c-sections are not uncommon, so she should be prepared for this possibilty. They can spay her during a c-section & the pups would need to be bottle rasied, so she may need all the help she can muster then - you, & other friends & neighbors?

The dog should do just fine with delivery the stud was only a few pounds larger than her anyway. She should be spayed as soon as possible after the pups are weend. Good Luck finding homes.

Please tell your friend to get her dog to a vet ASAP. If she can't afford the vet bills, then maybe she should seek help or even given up her dog.

Not to mention the puppies will need vaccinations, and vet checks as well. Be responsible!!!
