Most likely it was in one of the Apocryphal Gospels.
You will notice in the Gospel stories, most people who supported Our Lord during His Passion were women(eg: the women who cried for Him, as He Was Carrying His Cross). Therefore, it is quite possible & quite likely that it happened.

My take on "Veronica" is that she may not have even existed....there seems to be much speculation because of a relic venerated in the Eastern Church that is supposed to be the image of the face of Jesus Christ on a linen towel or napkin.
I say this since the name "Veronica" was not a common name amongst Jewish women (it's a Greek word, anyway - not a name)
Veronica = Ver (true) Ikon (image)...
It's a tradition.
I like it.

St. Veronica is said to be the woman who wiped Jesus's face on his way to be crusified and had his image appear on her cloth.

Though this woman did appear in the bible, her name is never mentioned. I don't know why they picked Veronica for her name.
the one on the handkerchief of the kind woman was distinguished as vera icon, the "true image"; this became veronica and was transferred to the woman as a personal name.
The above link might have some answers.

Hi, the story of Veronica is one of tradition rather than scriptural, she was said to be a disciple of Jesus like Martha and Mary, and was one of the weeping women in the crowds as Jesus was on His way to Calvary.
she is credited with wiping the blood stained face of her Lord with a towel, which again tradition has it that His Holy face left it`s imprint in the towel.
the name Veronica actually means Holy Icon .
