Up to and including December 31 2006, a US citizen will need a photo id (like a valid driver's license or a valid passport), and a proof of citizenship (which means either a birth certificate or a valid passport) to enter Canada.

As of January 1 2007 (and onward) a valid passport will be the only permissible document.

If you're driving, you WILL need a valid driver's license, regardless of the ID you need to show the border guard. This is regardless of whether you are crossing by car, or simply intend to drive once you're in the country.

If you're planning on being in the country for more than 30 consecutive days, it would make some sense to obtain an international driver's license before crossing into Canada. Some places can be a little more sticky about where you've been licenced than others...

The person that said you need a valid passport to drive across the border by January 2007 is ABSOLUTELY AND TOTALLY WRONG. This is only for air or sea trips.

Do I need a passport to travel to the United States?
Though passports are the document of choice for travel, Canadian citizens do not currently need a passport to travel to the United States from Canada. However, Canadians who are travelling outside Canada are encouraged to obtain a passport, as it is the most widely accepted proof of Canadian identity and citizenship.

In April 2005, the United States Government announced the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requiring travellers to and from the Americas, including Canadian citizens, to present a passport to enter or re-enter the United States.

The WHTI will be implemented in two phases, as follows:

January 8, 2007 - A passport will be required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

January 1, 2008 - The passport requirement will be extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

In 2008, a passport will be necessary. For sure you need a drivers' license and it never hurts to have an original birth certificate and a voter registration card. Are you flying? Ask the airline; they will know. Heck even if you aren't flying you can call reservations and tell them you are thinking about making a reservation and find out what's required.
