Well, after some pleading I finally convinced my husband to let my grandpa who lives 2 hours away to come down and stay with us for a week so he could take me places if I needed to go since I don't drive. My grandpa used to be a navy seal before he retired from them. Unfortunately I think he still thinks he is one because after he came down yesterday morning he immediately started "staking out" the neighborhood and build a makeshift guard shack near the mailbox. He brought his german sheperd with him too. He keeps saying the garage is his base of operations and is taking apart his rifles and cleaning them and has put maps up of the area. Well yesterday, I told him I needed to go across the street to borrow some sugar but when I got there the lady wanted to show me something in her backyard and my grandpa got worried because I was gone long. pay for it. My husband isn't too upset because he likes my grandpa being protective of me but this is kind of embarrassing. What should I do?

I see we're bringing in other family members now. Run out of controlling husband stories. I thought you could do better than this "Grampa thinks he's a Navy Seal" precisous really.

Ah, so now we're branching out to include other family members in our creative drama, are we?

Send Grandpa to a home and find some better questions to ask!

Grandpa is living in the past. He means no harm to you, he actually is trying to protect you. He will be gone at the end of the week and things will be back to normal. Just love him for who he is.

Play along! well, sort of. If you want to go shopping ,say somethi g like, "I got news from the commander that food is scarse. They want me to resupply. Can you take me to the food base? Thy'll give us food their. Theyre on our side. The secret base is called the "Safeway" or "Albertsons" or "Stop and Shop". And if you want to go to the neighbors or a freind, say something like "Those guys on the other side of the street? tehyre on our side. Did you know they created a good plan to inflitrate the Germans? "(or whatever your granpa calls the bad guys) say "I might be their longer than usual, because she has a lot of maps to show me." good luck!

It's time to send your grandfather to a place for retired military people. Check in your local area for one. They are better equipped to handle him more than you, your husband or even the neighbourhood...Good luck

Sounds like he may have Dementia. Here is a website to look at. I would seriously take him to the doctor to have him tested.

You should be glad that you still have your grandfather!!! I wish mine were still alive! The last time I saw my grandfather was when I was a kid!

Just remember that he will not always be around, so enjoy his company while you have him!!! What would I do if I were in your shoes??? Play along, make him happy!!!!!

Let Gramps be who he is, let him live out his imagination. He probably only has a short life left to live, so let him.
