I am and African American woman and I'm trying to leave the relaxing syle. I would like to get an Afrocentric look, style. Any ideas, any websites I should look at? Need help.

hi friend, i'm going through the same thing. i've been natural for about 2 years now and i am loving every minute of it!!! i think it really depends on how you are going to make the transition. i went without a relaxer for a few months (my hairdresser used foaming setting lotion so my hair would lay down at the root in the meantime). when i had about an inch or two of new growth, i got it all cut off. i felt renewed!!! i used a moisturizer by Dudley Products called PCA.
now that i've decided to let my hair grow out, i sometimes wear cornrows or my hair dresser will still use the foaming setting lotion and i can wear the relaxed look (this doesn't last as long). i wear sew-ins using kinky hair, so i'll still have the natural look. my two favorite styles have been the bantu knots and a mohawk. with my mohawk i just braid the sides and leave the rest in an afro. if you decide to wear these be prepared because they do draw a lot of attention but the bantu knots give you the afrocentric look that you are looking for. you can also get a set using flexi rods or drinking straws (the larger sized ones like at McDonalds work better). even a twist set would work. sometimes after washing and conditioning my hair, i moisturize, blow dry, oil my scalp and just pick it out into a afro. if you wear the afro, you can always wear a scarf or headband on some days.

try these sites: http://www.afrohair.com/styles/natural/index.htm
http://www.ehairbraiding.com
http://motowngirl.com

keep in mind that this will be a trying time for you and you will reach the point of wanting to get a relaxer since it's so much easier to maintain but stay strong and be patient. enjoy your beautiful natural hair and have fun with it too!!!

good luck queen and be blessed!!!

I trying to do the same thing. I still relax the front but the back is all but grown out now. As far as products to use you should check out this site:
www.carolsdaughter.com
the products are all natural and made especially for African hair. Some products I recommend are:
lisa'a hair elixir
hair balm
hair milk
They give our hair the moisture it needs while soothing itchy dry scalp. And they smell wonderful!
Stay beautiful and natural!!!
