I was told by my landlord that the type of calcium in milk is not able to be absorbed into your body and pretty much usless, is this true? and if so why do they advertise that milk makes your bones stronger?

Your landlord should stick to real estate.

Your bones need calcium to grow and it is one of the main elements in the structural (strength) part of your bones - along with carbon, phosphorous and oxygen which are readily available.

Calcium contained milk is readily absorbed into the body. If this wasn't so then it would be pointless for it to be there - milk is after all designed as a food for young growing mammals which need the calcium for their growing bones.

One of the reasons we are advised to drink milk, even as adults, is that our modern diet is not as rich in calcium as it was in earlier times. In earlier times it was more common to gnaw on bones and eat vegetables that hadn't been entirely cleaned which gave adults the necessary calcium for healthy bones (and of course many people in older times weren't exactly in the peak of physical condition anyway).

What your ill-informed landlord is probably thinking of is the sugar found in milk (called lactose) which some people cannot digest.

Does Milk Make Bones Stronger

Milk is a natural form of calcium, it helps with weight loss as well as stronger bones, healthier hair and teeth, if that was not true, the FDA would not allow them to advertise that it helps you.
Milk and other sources of Calucium found in the food are the most imprtant source for your body to have strong bones.

However, this is more evident when you start using them in early childhood. But still for grown-ups Milk is very important and useful.
It's God's made calcium, so how can it not be useful!

I'll answer this partly with another question. Yes, calcium in milk is good for you, but not essential by any means. You can get plenty of calcium from other sources. The milk lobby is one of the oldest and largest in our country. Think about this....every other mammal nurses as a youngster, then they stop. They have no problems with bone growth or strength. Why would a human be any different? Because the folks that sell you the milk have told you so. As stated earlier, milk's calcium isn't bad for you, but many hormones and antibiotics used in the care of the milk cow are bad for you. Do the math.

No thats not true. Milk is rich in calcium and we need it all of our lives. There are certain types of coral calcium that are even better for us, but regardless... we need milk or some form of it.

There is no "type" of Calcium. As long as you are getting adequate amounts of vitamin D, the calcium should be absorbed just fine.

IT'S SUPPOSED TO DOESNT IT? YOUR LANDLORD IS YOUR LANDLORD FOR A REASON, AND NOT YOUR DIETITIAN. MILK IS SUPPOSED TO H E L P YOUR BODY ABSORB CALCIUM. JUST A FYI, CALCIUM ALSO HELPS NERVES AND MUSCLES WORK PROPERLY AND HELPS BLOOD CLOT. REGULAR EXERCISING ALSO PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN PREVENTING BONE LOSS.

It has to combine with Phosphorus.

Mild does make your bones stronger. Spinach has it too, and meat and soup from boiled bones, and Phosamax too.
