Our military forces are fine at the moment. Spread out but enough to be fine. We probably couldn't invade Iran or something like that because it will stretch us too thin. No president would enact a draft because it would make him the least popular president in history and the people wouldn't take it. Besides, if we wanted more batallions all we would have to do is say so and we could isntantly create and fill another one. As one other person said, it's all about the money. They don't want to create a large army because it costs money and so they have to limit the size.

The people do not support the war, so any party that proposed the draft would be banished from the whole political scene at the next election. People have the right to join the armed forces, but who would vote for a politician who forces them to risk their childrens lives. Especially as politicians would find a way of keeping their kids at home.

Heck no. If a real threat was made against the US, every abled citizen would be willing to stand up and fight. People enlisted after 9-11, but there are not too many who continue to support the war in Iraq.

It's political suicide to speak of the "D" word.
This is where politics becomes very innefficient -- taxes and drafts. The only people who should make the draft decision are the military commanders. Not political appointees. Take it out of their hands entirely.
We may need a draft though, Iraq has drained our resources, and Iran is waving a nuclear banner, as is N. Korea...and we don't have much left.

The story on Iraq is that no one has a good idea on what to do and how to do it. If we really want to win we need to commit more troops and do it fast. This will require a draft. But the war was founded on lies and deceit so mothers do not want their kids to die for a lie.

If only 10% of the folks who say they support the war in Iraq were to enlist, our armed forces would have 5-7 million people. That's plenty.

US military strength is at the maximum limit allowed by Congress.
The issue is not a lack of volunteers - it is Congress not wanting to spend the money to pay and equip them.
