The primary source of aid was the American Red Cross, whose charter specifically declares them non-theistic and non-atheistic, that is, they do not exist to serve or deny a religion, they exist to serve victims.
As for what my role was, I spent a week on 24/7 standby for my Volunteer Search & Rescue team to be activated to go help. How about you? What did you PERSONALLY do to go help?

I was as some have said on here, a Katrina victim. We went through a bad time it is true, and there were many people who stood up and helped us when it was rough. Local churches helped those who were stranded or needed help in their travels afer the loss of their homes. In the more grand scale of national aid, it was Red Cross that acted as a clearing house for all the aid money that was distributed to Katrina Evacuees. I know of a personal experience where a local church in the place I was staying at that seemed to think the Katrina Evacuees were "unclean" because they had been given the wrath of god or some relgious rhethoric. In the end, over 1000 people lost their lives, and thousands of other watched as all they had ever loved and known in this world was washed away. Some families in the New Orleans area have still not been able to come home and to know that the home they lived in for Generations would be rebuilt. New Orleans and the whole Gulf Coast has been wounded in a way that will take a long time to heal, but the point of all this is clear to me. When aid was needed it was individuals, secular companies, and foriegn aid that was the first to try to rescue those who needed it their darkest hour. The national churches of America as well as the illustrous President of the United States were of no real help.
The answer to your question is this. Individial Americans, rare churches and secular entities, and even foriegn powers shined as beacons of hope for the many who suffered during this time. Those whom would sit in the house of the Lord (that includes President Bush) and speak from some unqualified moral high ground were of no use and were nowhere to be seen when it really counted. If you want to beleive that God's hand was here, then thank the common man, it was he that did the real work, even the people of other nations reacted with a compassion that our own churches seemed to feel was unneeded.

roflmao. What are you smoking?
A Satanist is NOT an Atheist and an Atheist is NOT a Satanist. Here's something that might surprise you.... in order to be a Satanist, you have to believe in Christ because Satan exists in no other religion than Christianity.
Now... as for Katrina... did you go through it? My husband did. In fact, he's still living there. So, until you have lived through the damned thing, don't you try to tell anyone what you think the churchs did and didn't do. Because the churchs didn't do a whole hell of alot.
The secular people, on the other hand, were in there getting their hands dirty. They were handing out food, digging bodies out of the water, saving pets abandoned during the storm, etc.
You want to know what the gvt did? Well let me tell you... water trucks were sent by Wal-mart to help the victims and Bush's idiot National Guard turned them away.
Bush walked around the place for an hour with his sleeves rolled up acting like he was doing something while he did nothing.
Condoleeza Rice went shopping for shoes while Katrina tore the south to shreds.
So until you've lived through it... until you've seen the roof torn off your house by a hurricane... until you've not had electricity or running water for months.... until your home was litterally picked up by a hurricane and tossed like a doll... then bloody watch your mouth.
The churchs did NOTHING in comparison to secular people.
How do I know this? My husband and his family are from New Orleans. I know EXACTLY what happened because I lived through it with them.
For the first time on here, I'm actually SEETHING with anger. I could say something so nasty right now that I'd be banned for life.
HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!
How dare you turn Katrina into something that glorifies the religious when it just isn't true...
I was there. I lived through it. I suffered through it all with my husband and his family.
Religious bull.... watch your mouth...

hi =) President Bush via his allowing FEMA to degenerate below his famed "fatherland secure practices administration" did each little thing he possibly ought to to make confident that all and sundry volunteer help got here too overdue to be of help to maximum folk. i assume, if it extremely is "allowing" churches and agencies to help, then certainly, you ought to be ultimate suited. It replaced into, although, no longer his place to "enable" or "disallow" anybody to help or no longer help. i'm a Buddhist. we are a small minority, and not o.k. prepared. extra often than not, we made person donations, like I did. I paid for one hundred situations of bottled water, and made a donation to the purple flow, in lieu of blood, by way of fact i won't be able to donate blood myself. that's what I, as someone did. It replaced into no longer lots. It replaced into what i ought to do, nevertheless, in accordance to my means. The bottled water replaced into allotted via a branch of the PA national guard, and not a non secular entity. Many Atheists and Satanists have been very outspoken on the undesirable coping with of the Katrina catastrophe, and the environmental themes which contributed to it. Many "stable christians" have remained silent, on those concerns, lending their acquiescence to the approach that killed maximum of, and is that this usa's impressive shame. do no longer poke at hornet's nests, little boy, you will get stung. Namaste, and happy trip trips, --Tom

Whatever they have done(atheist/satanist) was for their own self interest. Bill Gates is just another rich guy looking for another tax right off. And I'll bet he's making money off the whole katrina thing. Look at the money spent on the super dome gotta make sure we have foot ball, while people are still living in trailers, and in the streets. It's the Godless, heartless, gutless, money grubbers, that allow their brothers and sisters to live in a shambles, while the rich man makes money off someone else's misfortune.

Really? And here i was under the mistaken assumption that the Red Cross was the largest contributor to the victims of Katrina, along with the Mexican and Canadian armies....
Hey, what do I know??
You, oh ignorant one, need to learn some basic historical facts before posting such hate! Besides, perhaps if your God hadnt CAUSED Katrina to happen, then we wouldnt be having this discussion, would we?

I regularly gave my money to organizations that help with these types of events, like the Red Cross. What I did not do was give that money to the Church where two thirds of it ends up being wasted on perks for well connected clergy and building insanely ridiculous churches. Just enjoy the tax exempt status that allows the church to run the largest for profit business on earth with no taxation and then go away.
Addition:
I would also like to thank paulywog publicly for the comments he was nice enough to Email me on sending money to an organization started by Christians(Red Cross),not sure if it was meant to be a smack at my answer which makes it relevant to my answer, since regardless of it's origins the Red Cross helps all in need and does not compromise the mission by putting conversion efforts high on list of priorities like many other organizations, therefore their origins are irrelevant. And though no group is perfect the vast majority of their money actually goes to help those in need,a fact that cannot be said for most Christian groups.

Where did you get your information? I doubt very seriously that most of the funds came from the churches and ministries, it more likely came from Secular AND Religious people around the world.

Atheists don't have an organization. Many helped individually. Many helped dispite Bush's over committed support to Faith-Based organizations.

HOW DARE YOU!?!?! You have some MONSTER sized balls to be posting this!
My friends lost everything they had in Katrina. Have you even been to New Orleans? Do you even know that all their "help" still hasn't gotten there!?! It's been over a year, and good ol' Bush still hasn't done a darn thing to fix things. Take a drive down I-10 and see it for yourself.
As far as what I did to help...let's see. I housed two friends who were misplaced, I donated to the Red Cross, I sent food and clothing (with my friends), and I made phone calls for my friends who couldn't reach people they knew.
Let me tell you something else. I went down there two weeks ago to help out some more. I spent money and tried to help their tourism out so that they could return to the way they used to be. It's still horrible down there, and the only "improvements" I can see are the trailers parked outside of their devastated homes...
and that wasn't even the worst part of New Orleans that I saw either.
So you know what, take your Christianity and shove it up your @$$. You crossed the line with that one pal. You better hope there isn't a god, because you will BURN for that.
