One of our sales fellows wanted a letter typed up with the word 'tercial' in it. I had not heard of the word and decided to check out a few dictionarys. I went on line to four dictionaries and put the word in - none came up with the word and I used 'Cambridge,' 'Encarta,' and 'Websters' - can't remember the other one!
The sales fellow still insists that it is a proper word. Please bear in mind that I was sending this letter to France. The contact in France speaks very good English - but if I can't find the word - will he?

What is the context? Is it possible that he means *tertiary*, which refers to a third thing ... as in primary, secondary, tertiary?

(prounounced tersheeairy)

There is also TERTIAL which refers to a particular set of feathers on a bird's wing.

Tercial... as far as I can ascertain, it's not an accepted word. However, perhaps your sales fellow meant Tertiary, dependant upon what they were writing about:

from 63 million to 2 million years ago

third: coming next after the second and just before the fourth in position

third level of commerce (service industries etc)

I'm not sure if tercial is a word. It may be though, but I believe he was looking for the word terciary. Terciary means thirdly. It is the third word after primary (1 or first), secondary (2 or second), and terciary (3 or third), then would come quatery, quintery, sextery, heptery, octery, and nanery. Of course, we usually just switch to thirdly or fourthly by that time. If tercial is a word, it refers to a third item.

I believe you are referring to Romans 10:17 "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." To have faith in anything is intentional, not coincidental. Many have chosen after they have heard the Word to not have faith. We do have a free will after all! I believe what this verse is saying is that faith in God is impossible without hearing the Word.
