In fact many people do know the reason for our existence, and it is through the Church that this knowledge is transmitted. God revealed it to the Church, the Church reveals it to mankind. That's how it works. Have you noticed that those who seem clueless about our purpose in being here are invariably those without religious faith?

Put simply, if there was no longer a demand for organized religion, then religion would cease to exist and society would be 100% secular. But since there are billions of believers out there, the major religions won't be dying out anytime soon.

Religion exists because of man's compulsion to believe in a higher power than himself. Something that is responsible for all the unexplained things in life. No matter how far back in history you go, you will find that something was worship as a deity/god.

Religion exists because people believe, not the other way around. It is a result which you cannot cancel. You can't stop people from believing.
Oh and with respect to all other religions, no one did anything as profound as Jesus.

Just because you don't doesn't mean that noone does.
Listening to you is like listening to some Hobo standing outside a fancy restaurant asking everyone that walks past why those doggone rich people spend so much on lobster, or why they only put a very small amount of wine in the glass, or why they have so many forks......

Who says no one knows? Someone said: "I am the way, the truth and the life. None shall come to the Father but by me."
You can say you don't know. But don't say no one knows.
Of course I realize it is not intelligent to say you know something. Real intelligence claims to know nothing.
Like "I don't really know anyone will be able to read this answer. It's only my perception that the internet works, but it can be my imagination". That is the kind of nonsense people would have us talk in spiritual matters. I'm not willing.

Humans are always going to need an explination for things they don't understand. The powerhungry will exploit this and tell us that "we have to do this,or have to do that" because it is simply another form of control. Why do you think they put in that passage about paying god and paying ceasar? They wanted money and power. Now they have millions of followers that blindly do what they're told and don't ask questions. So the short answer is "power and control."

because people like to have something to live by and believe in. Purpose, a sense of fulfilment, a comfort blanket, fear of death.
How can anyone say they KNOW through religion... you DONT, you BELIEVE but you have not actually seen Jesus/Mohammed/Moses/God/Krishna so how can you say you KNOW? You don't. I don't respect people who think they know, just because they read a book they agree with.
Or if that's all ok, I KNOW Richard Dawkins is God, savvy?

We are insecure about the meaning of our existence. So we invented a meaning for it. Result: Religion.
