It is funny that nobody thinks about the obvious. To keep from getting sick just keep yourself healthy. Eat healthy foods, exercise regularly. Shower daily and wash your hands often. That is all it takes. Of course nothing is 100% so if you start to feel sick take Zicam as soon as possible and you will feel better in no time. Good Luck!

There is a preventive (called "prophylactic") medicine that is far, far and above the best single medicine you will EVER find to protect yourself against colds, flu, and all the other communicable diseases. That preventive actually comes in two parts. They are (1,) soap, and (2) water. That's right - there is nothing quite as effective at combatting disease than simple, old-fashioned and INEXPENSIVE washing of your hands at all appropriate times. See, I've been in practice for forty-two years, and in all that time, most of the sick patients I've had could've prevented their illness had they done that simple little bit with soap and water! Imagine - washing your hands six to ten times a day costs a couple pennies, while coming to my office with a preventable illness and having to get lab tests and maybe x-rays and then take shots and pills and all that costs - well, right today, an office visit like that costs you over two hundred dollars! So use soap and water - it works a lot better than an apple a day to keep ME away!

People say to wash your hands often, but that's not necessarily true. As long as you wash your hands before putting food in your mouth, you'll be fine.
Keep your vitamin C level up - that is, eat citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, limes, or grapefruits. Orange juice is great for you too. A lot of times some soft drinks like SoBe pack in a good deal of Vitamin C, as well. Check the nutrition facts, though, to be sure.
Make sure you stay warm, and keep well rested. Seven or eight hours of sleep a night at least, and more if you have the time to manage.
Drink plenty of fluids. I wouldn't recommend soda, but if you want to that's your decision. Water, and drinks with minerals in them like Propel, SoBe, Gatorade, or Powerade, etc., also work well.
At the FIRST sign of any illness - even if you're not sure, and you only THINK you might be sick, raise up your vitamin C intake. If you need, take an Airborne (which you should be able to buy at your local grocery store) for an extra immune system boost. Hopefully that will kill off your sickness before it gets worse.

Vitamin C is a powerful immune system support. 1000 mg/day is the recommmended dosage to prevent colds and common infections. If you still feel a cold coming on, increase the dosage to 100 mg/ every 2 hours, combined with 2 Echinacea capsules. Take 1 zinc lozenge per day. Continue until bedtime, and if symptoms persist the next morning, continue for one more day. Symptoms should disappear. (You cannot overdose; it's a water-soluble vitamin).
Linus Pauling, the only person to win two Nobel Prizes, did extensive research on C and made these recommendations. Personal experience has validated it over and over.
Echinacea is an immune system strengthener but is only effective for short-term treatment. Don't take it daily. Two weeks is the maximum, but I find that I only need it for a day or two, until symptoms disappear.
BTW, humans and guinea pigs are the only mammals that don't produce their own Vitamin C.
P.S. Frequent hand-washing is a good idea, but please do NOT obsess over antibacterial this-and-that. They are largely ineffective (ordinary soap removes bacteria just as well) and may actually increase bacteria's resistence to meds. Remember, we are surrounded by bacteria and viruses every day. We get sick only when our immune system is suppressed due to fatigue, stress, poor diet etc. Take your Vitamin C and you will stay healthy!

you can't be 100% protected from getting sick, but make sure to wash your hands often or at least whenever necessary, and if you begin to feel sick, take some Airborne, for example, or a vitamin C drop or start drinking lots of orange juice--you may be able to head it off before it gets worse. otherwise, just about any cold medicine works ok; theraflu is a popular one.

You can take Nyquil and Theraflu together and then at night after u shower, use Vick's Vapor rub. To prevent getting sick you can keep socks or shoes on at all times, drink plenty of water and fluids everyday. Don't let anybody cough on you, get monthly or yearly immune system checkups and many other things...
