Depends on what time he gets up and how well he does on that amount of sleep. Some people just naturally need less sleep than others, some more. I'd say compromise and try 830pm unless he gets up really, really early. I think a child should at least go to bed 9 hours before they get up. Tell him if he doesn't do well (i.e. getting up harder, grumpier, etc.) that he will have to go back to the earlier time!
But it also depends on the parent's bedtime, especially if you're married. You need your own time to unwind and talk to your better half!

Each child is different with the amount of sleep they need. IF he has lots of activities after school, he probably does need to be in bed by 8 or 8:30. If he is more sedate, then 9 may be ok. I had one son who needed 10 hrs and his brother was good with 8 hrs of sleep. During growing spurts they need more sleep also. Try the 9 for a week and see how he acts and how his schoolwork is. IF it works, then keep it. As a general rule my kids and grandkids all had an 8:30 bedtime at 7 yrs.Now that my grandkids are 8,9,&10 I have them read or watch tv for 30 min before turning out the lights at 9. I let them stay up on weekends until 10 but no later.Best wishes!

I think 8 is a good time.My boys go to bed at 8 but ain't asleep till about 8:30(ages 6,4,3) and my daughter who is 11 months goes to bed anywhere between 8:00 and 10:00.They all get up at 7:00am. They all get to stay up till 9 or 10 on weekends.Of course some of that might change in Feb. when we have a new baby.

Children his age need 9-10 hours of sleep, so base his time in bed by the time he needs to get up in the morning. My kids are in bed by 8:15 or 8:30. They have to get up at 6:30am. And trust me, they need every minute of that sleep!

well how early does he wake up?
if he's waking up too early, then pushing his bedtime a half hour later wouldn't hurt him. you should also consider that every kid on the planet says the kidsn in his class go to bed later than him. It's probably true, but you shouldn't factor that in when deciding his bedtime. when i was 7 i had to go to bed at 7:30, but my mom was kind of strict back then.
maybe you could try out a later bedtime, but make it on conditions: if he's too tired in the morning, or if he's still complaining about his bedtime, it's back to 8:00
good luck!

Depends on how much sleep he really needs. If you put him to bed at 8 pm and he gets up in the morning ok, well try him a little later. I used to find that if they get up grumpy they should need more sleep. Try a little later each evening, till you are both satisfied and okay with one another. He will probably be upset if he thinks he goes to bed at 8pm and his friend goes at 9pm. Trial and error really, as all parenting is. Good Luck.

That's a good time. I still put my 10 yr. old to bed at 8. He has a hard enough time getting up now. But remember, you are the parent!! If you told him to go to bed at 4pm, that's the rule. Put your foot down or you'll loose the respect.

Does he get up in the morning without any trouble?? If so, try the 9pm. If he starts giving you trouble getting up, revert back to 8pm. I personally would (and have) put my 7yr old to bed at 8. They need to earn staying up later - 9-10yrs old.

He needs 10 hours of sleep a night. We put our children to be at 8:00 until they were in about 6th grade, then it was 9:00 until they reached high school. They could stay up until 10:00 while in high school.
