i guess it works on the transformer principle, the primary may be connected in the base station and the handset probably has the secondary, when the two come together a low voltage would be induced in the secondary, this is converted to dc to charge the battery

Maybe it's not rechargable. Does the charger plug into an electrical outlet? If so... INDUCTION.
