I am thinking of getting a pug dog. However, I am also planning to have kids in the next 2 years. Should I wait till I have my kids to get the dog? I am just worried that if I get the dog first and then have kids, that the dog will feel neglected. Can this happen or does it not really matter?

I'd get the dog. 2 years is a long time. My friends are all animal people and the pets survived the new addition just fine. My boss's golden labs even did fine. The dog will adapt. Do you really think I'm going to neglect the animals I've had in my life for over 10 years? Get rid of them just because of the kid?

There's things you can do to prepare the dog for the new arrival so its not so much of a shock. Also you can take the dog to a dog trainer for help preparing it.

You know, life, living it, I mean, is a good and sometimes hard teacher. I had a beautiful black cocker spanial (named Jet) and later I had a beautiful baby daughter. They never had much to do with each other, the dog played in the yard and the baby played inside and in her playpen. When my daughter was about 2 years old and the dog was about 4 years old, we moved and circumstances changed for us all. One day my 2 year old walked up to the dog's water dish, touched it and said, "here's your water, Jet." Without warning the dog leapt at her and bit her in the eye. Fortunately, I was standing right there and stopped the dog immediately. As for the damage to my daughters face, it only tore the eyebrow and eyelid.
I never hesitated, I took the dog to the vet and had her put to sleep. Perhaps I could have tried to make a reconcilliation between the two. But I was young and fearful.
Since then, I have had more babies and dogs, cats, birds, goats, chickens, etc. I learned to deal with such things over time. But I feel an animal who has had the rule of the house resents any new person or other animal. You might ask a vet. about it they probably have an opinion that would be helpful to you.

Doesn't matter if you pay equal attention to your dog. Get the dog now, it will get you in the mood of caring for a dependant little bugger, when the baby comes socialize the dog to the baby. Socialize the dog all the and encourage it to be friendly and caring for others. Pugs are great with kids, lots of energy and fun. I think dogs and kids are a great combo if you have the time. My baby was 3 months old when we got the dog. They have been the best. We would have gotten him sooner, but he wasn't born yet!

I forgot one more thing, as the baby grows teach the baby a nice or gentle command for touching the dog. Boundries are a good thing to teach when it comes to animal and kids.

I would suggest to get a dog first and that way you can train it and make sure the dog is around kids and babies so that the dog is use to the new little one,,, Most dogs accept babies and they will be protective over them,,, I hope this helps and good on your new dog and having your new baby and also Happy Thanksgiving

Yes, it can happen. If you treat the dog like a dog and not a human, you might do OK. Personally, I would have the kids and then get the dog.

It is better to have the kids first, because the dog could be jealous and need special treatment for a long time until the babies come. So until you train the dog to have you as "parents", and then train it again to not be jealous and harm the new babies, it's a long time. Plus when you have the babies having to take care of the dog too is not the best you can hope for. Better kids first.

Most small dogs will adjust to a new baby without much trouble. You just want to handle them a lot so they are use to little kid’s grabby nature. Mess with their ears, paws, and tail a lot right from the beginning. I would actually try that before you buy the puppy. Take the one that handles it the best. Below are a bunch of articles that should help.

I would definately get the puppy first. You're going to be busy enough raising your kids, adding a puppy to that equation spells frustration, and chaos.

Get the dog first so that once you have kids, you won't have to change diapers and house train at the same time.

I had my son when my dog was 5. He was extremely attached to me, but did just fine. I just made sure that I could walk the dog and the stroller at the same time :)

Believe me, it will be much easier having young kids with a dog you've already trained.

Get the dog, have the children, and give them plenty of affection. The dog will realize the importance of the children and may take to being protective of them. You can talk to an animal behaviorist if trouble arise, but I doubt they will.
