I bartended for years. There is never a way to get used to what people are going to order. There is alot of "half and half" drinks, ie. Jack and Coke, Gin and Tonic, Vodka and Tonic. What you learn to do over the years of bartending is to anticiapate what the person coming up to you is going to order. The college ago girl is going to order the "Now" drink(The most talked about in the media drink, usually a pain to make, ie. The Mojoito), the Manly Man, ie. the man who doesn't know what alcohol it likes yet(Usually on a budget as well) orders a domestic beer, Draft if in a bar, bottle in a night club. The older ladies, dripping in diamonds(Real or fake) and Louis Vuitton(Real or Fake also), most likely out on the town without their husbands, breasts out(Also Real or Fake) order something strong, Martini extra dry or Vodka Tonic, and don't forget their garnish...they WILL remind you! Those are a few basic guide lines but sometimes you get thrown a curve ball, always expect the unexpected and double count change before handing back to customer(Preferable under a security cameras also try to show the bill if it is large under the camera, especially for a small tab paid for with a large bill), when a normal person loses $5, it sucks but you deal with, when a drunk thinks you "stole" their $5 you'll never hear the end of it, atleast you will have documentation with the camera!

Just like martinis, the old classics are making a comeback. I love Old-Fashioned's, especially made with southern comfort. There have been many times I have guided a bartender through the recipe and , after tasting, heshe has put it on his list of house specials as it is so smooth in evening! Take an old-fashioned glass (yes, that's why they got the name! also called on-the-rocks size, the short stubby glasses). 2 or 3 ice cubes, put in 1 and one-half ounces of Southern Comfort, 1 sugar cube, spash on 2 or 3 drops Angostura Bitters and "muddle" to melt the cube. Add a half-slice orange and a maraschino cherry. Pour 2 or 3 ounces of ginger ale over and stir. So smooth.

Tom Collins, though I don't think they are all that popular any more

2 oz. Gin
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
1 tsp. Powdered Sugar
Club Soda

Instructions:
Shake with ice and before straining into collins glass. Add ice cubes. Fill with club soda and stir. Decorate with slices of lemon (and orange) and a cherry. Serve with a straw.

Sammy Special
Ingredients:

* 1 oz Malibu rum
* 1 oz White rum
* to taste Pineapple juice
* to taste Orange juice

Mixing instructions:

Put all ingredients in a blender with ice cubes. (More ice = more froth.) Blend until smooth and frothy. Pour into glass and enjoy.
Creator/contributor's comments:

Be careful as it is deceptively smooth and potent.

A blue lagoon:

2 measures of Blue Curacao
1 measure of white rhum
fill with lemonade at taste.

I like it pretty strong (although it does not taste strong at all).

Had crazy parties on that. Great on the patio in the summer!

attempt a tom collins or a seabreeze in case you prefer to stick with vodka (based on the screwdriver). even with the indisputable fact that, in case you prefer to stay on the rum area, ask for a rum punch at any good bar and you would be extra suitable than happy.

Classic Margartia

Tequila (I'm partial to Herradura, anejo)
Triple Sec (Cointreau, to be specific)
Lime juice (Key lime juice is my preference.)

On the rocks, no salt.
