Does anyone know where the "109" in the name Messerschmidt Bf or Me-109 actually came from or what it means in the name?

Me-109 ( or Bf.109) was designed by Willy Messerschmidt
Messerschmidt means knifemaker.
The number 109 was a serial number of the model, in fact there was also Messerschmidt Bf-108 that was not a fighter, it was a sports and touring airplane.
There were also Bf-110, Bf-210, Bf-410. They were heavy fighters.
Bf stands for Bayerische Flugzeugwerke(Bavarian Aircraft Works) that was the name of the manufacturer.
