I am going on vacation to LA next week and I am looking for some fun things to do. Also, I would like to know if there are any good wineries in the area (within 2 hours driving time). Thanks for any suggestions.

Oh, btw, I would rather not do the super touristy stuff. I would like to get some ideas on what people that live there do for fun! Also, what is it about Venice Beach that I hear has interesting people? Is that a bad place to go/stay?

Go to Pasadena! There is a lot to do there, it is safe and fun. There is the Huntington Gardens and Library, the Rose Bowl, the Gamble House, great restaurants and shops. If you go down to the Arroyo by the Rose Bowl you can probably see them working on some of the floats for the Rose Parade. In Pasadena, you are very close to the Angeles Crest Highway which is a great drive offering fabulous views of the LA basin. Venice Beach is a real kick and you will find all kinds of very interesting people and shops. Don't know that I would stay in that area, though.

You can take the I-10 freeway to the I-15 freeway south and take the Temecula exit to go wine tasting. You will see a little sign directing you to the wineries. I like the VanRockler winery very much and you get very cool glasses there.

Within 2 hours driving time you can definitely visit Santa Barbara, Ojai and Temecula area wineries. There is one that is pretty decent and quite close to L.A. It is called Agua Dulce. It's just about an hour away from L.A. and actually has some drinkable wines.

For a weekday, a really cool, non-touristy but very hidden L.A. thing to do is visit the Temple of Self Realization Lake Shrine and Meditation Gardens. This is located on Sunset Blvd. just about 5 blocks from the ocean and once you're inside, you'd never know the bustling city is right outside. Part of Ghandi's ashes are buried here. It sounds much most airy-fairy than it is. In actuality, this is just a calm, beautiful place to sit, stroll and enjoy a sunny afternoon. Best of all it's free - even the parking!

Depends on you age (or maturity I suppose). Plenty of stuff for children/teens/20s like Disneyland, Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, etc. Pretty boring for more mature people though there are plenty of incredible restaurants and interesting shopping areas. Mostly LA is limited by the fact it is so spread out and has such a crummy public transportation system. Makes it harder to be a tourist here.

Go to Warner Bros. Studios (Behind Universal Studios), they take you on the sound stage and back lots which you cant do at Universal.

At Universal City Walk, you can get tickets to see the filming of sitcoms and game shows, the tickets are free and the studio provides the transportation. It's really fun. You can also get tickets in front of the Graumann's Chinese Theater at the walk of stars/Kodak Theater.
