This came up recently regarding the American armed forces. There is a viewpoint that says that freedom has a price. Sometimes it is about more than a personal benefit. Sometimes it is about doing something for the body politic in an effort to repay the efforts of those who came before you.

nothing as at the moment they would be expected to give their lives for their country in a war that's pointless and should not be any of our countries business

but if we weren't involved in a war at the moment it can offer them a lot, to be apart of a unit to work hard and play hard to have mates for the rest of your lives that stick by you through thick and thin, to travel, learn new skills and to see the world to be part of something that will set you on the road to better things than being in a dead end low paid lousy job you hate day in day out. to be respected by others for what you are and can do to yes be shouted at but its worth it to have a life that's has good times and bad but to be a part of something with others, mates
