It gave them the opportunity to develop better weapons and ways of waging war.

In the development of new longer range weapons it made the act of killing easier and therefore made wars more common. When you can kill from a distance which is getting bigger the more advanced we get technologically the less psychological effect it has on the person doing the killing.
