Phillips makes an 'ambilight' plasma - the commercials look awesome!

It is generally considered to be a good idea to have some background lighting around a TV so that you are not looking at a bright area surrounded by dark. It's harder on the eyes, and the surrounding light improves the apparent contrast of the TV picture. That is the reason for the back light.
