I was just wondering about the worming and at what age I could safely worm them, and if I could worm mommie while she is nursing. They are only 3wks old. American Eskimo Spitz Puppies.

Three weeks is a great age to start deworming. If you plan on doing it yourself, make sure to read the directions on the product to see what age they recommend using it and whether or not it's safe for nursing moms. Be aware that not every dewormer covers every parasite. It would be a great idea to get the puppies into a vet clinic to see exactly what they might have.

Some worms or parasites will not be evident in the stool and can only be seen microscopically. Even under a microscope, not every sample will contain a worm/parasite. If your puppy has hookworms, for example, you may not see evidence until he or she is severely infested and SICK. I wouldn't wait for signs, get them checked.

I really don't like using those kill-every-worm known to mankind dewormers. It's like hunting a sparrow with an M-16: you're going to hit more than the sparrow. The pup probably was infected by the mother and now you're feeding more worms than puppy, so the parasites must go. When he was in to see his vet, was he given a dewormer? If he was then that's why you're seeing so many now - they're leaving the toxic environment inside there. If the vet didn't give him a dewomer then just call the office and say you need to pick some up.

Even if you worm a bit ch prior to being pregnant, she can STILL pass the worms to the puppies. Roundworms encyst in the muscle tissue of dogs. Hormones like in pregnancy cause them to be released and passed to the puppies through the placenta and milk. This is why GOOD breeders worm puppies at 2,4,6,and 8 weeks. Roundworms will compete for the nutrients and can cause debilitated puppies. You ALWAYS worm the mom at the same time you are working the puppies.

Don't wait for weaning, don't wait until they are in new homes...START NOW!!!!!!!

There are some websites for those who want to wait or say 2 weeks is too young.

I consulted my vet when I got my 6 week old siberian husky puppies - they had a very bad infestation of worms and almost died due to them not mentioning the vet bill which took me over a year to pay off.
He recommended puppies getting dewormed at 3weeks of age - but best bet is to take them in with the mom to your vet - this way he can recommend what to do and also let u know whether or not they do have worm problem already.
Good luck!

3 weeks old is a bit young. Also, is there evidence of worms (vomiting or in the stool)? A fecal flotation test will let you know if the mom or babies have worms. Have one done then the vet will give you direction from there.

Most vets say don't worm them unless you have evidence of worms. Take some stool samples to the vet to make sure they need it.
