Acid reflux is usually caused by a hiatus hernia - a rupture in the muscle wall of the diaphragm which allows part of the stomach to extend into the chest and has the side effect of allowing the acidic contents of the stomach to escape back up the oesophagus (your gullet). The main problem with this is that (as you are experiencing) you get bad acid heartburn. In the longer term the lining of the oesophagus changes to ressemble the stomach lining (called Barrett's Oesophagus) and this often leads to oesophageal cancer.

Treatment is on three levels:-
1. Diet. Eat less and lose weight which reduces the pressure on your stomach. Certain foods also cause acid reflux more than others - eg spicy foods, fatty foods, tomatoes. Keep a record of what you eat and how bad your acid is afterwards and then reduce the foods that give you the most discomfort.

2. Antacids. Over-the-counter indigestion tablets may help. Drinking milk before or during a meal may help. Stronger drugs are available on prescription if you go to your doctor and get the hiatus hernia properly diagnosed (by sending a camera down into your stomach).

3. Surgery. For severe cases the only cure is a surgical operation to repair the hernia.

You should be checked for a possible hiatus hernia which can allow stomach contents to reflux into the throat. Alternatively, your diet may need to be reviewed. Excess amounts of caffeine and smoking will give heartburn and acid reflux. Rushed meals, spicy foods etc. etc. In the meantime get something like Gaviscon or Rennies to alleviate the problem, review your eating and dietary patterns, and see your GP to rule-out anything more serious. Your earlier respondent, starlet10, is correct when she says that something needs to be done about the situation. Constant acid reflux left unchecked can cause all manner of problems, many of which can be life-threatening.

Chronic heartburn is usually from acid reflux - stomach acid is getting past the little valve and into your esophagus. You also should know some natural ways to treat your heartburn. Learn them here https://bitly.im/aM9q1

The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.

heartburn the most common symptom of acid reflux disease (also known as gastroespohageal reflux disease, or GERD). Heartburn feels like a burning pain in the center of the chest. It is caused by acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus. is a symptom of acid reflux disease (GERD) Also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Go see a doctor...I could tell you the name of all products that help reduce acidity but a doctor is your best defense.. They can do a little corrective surgery if the problem is bad enough because left unchecked the repeated acid burn to the esophagus can cuse esophagial cancer, in which case you will need surgery and end up with a hole in your throat (stoma) and if bad enough you end up speaking with an electrical thing you hold up to your larnyx.

Certain foods and lifestyle are considered to promote gastroesophageal reflux:
Coffee, alcohol, and excessive amounts of Vitamin C supplements are stimulants of gastric acid secretion. Taking these before bedtime especially can promote evening reflux. Calcium containing antacids are in this group[3].
Foods high in fats and smoking reduce lower esophageal sphincter competence, so avoiding these tends to help, as well. Fat also delays emptying of the stomach.
Having more but smaller meals also reduces the risk of GERD, as it means there is less food in the stomach at any one time.
avoid eating for 2 hours before bedtime
avoid soft drinks
avoid chocolate and peppermint
avoid spicy foods
avoid acidic foods like oranges and tomatoes (however, they are okay when fresh.)
avoid cruciferous vegetables: onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts
milk and milk-based products contain calcium and fat, so should be avoided before bedtime.
Consult a Gastroenterologist.
Please see the webpages for more details on Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

You probably need to go to your doctor and have them give you a prescribtion to a strong acid-reflux medicine like. Go soon because it could get worse. Otherwise, try eating bread when you get it so it can absorb all the acid.

You need to see the doc and get this checked out as you probably have esophageal erosion from all the acid. Without treatment this can cause severe damage. Also raise the head of your bed up on blocks so you sleep elevated at noc. For now see the doc and get this treated before you wind up with permanent damage.

It's the contents from your stomach, which contain acid to help the digestion of food being refluxed back into your oesophagus, or the tube that leads from your mouth to your stomach. If it's prolonged it can cause esophageal var ices, which is an inflammation of the veins around your oesophagus. These can obstruct your swallow reflex or bleed profusely. It would be better to see your GP who can then refer you on to see a Gastero-enterologist.
