This does not mean he sinned, besides non of us can say we are pure. God told us in the Quran very clearly (I wish I know the verse's no.): never purify yourselves. It means 'none of you can say I am better than so and so'. Abraham (pbuh) being a model for all of us, asks for redemption for any mishap he might have committed. He is showing that even Prophets NEED God's forgiveness. He is asking this for all followers, it does not mean Ismaiel in particular. The above answers are mere mockery.
We, Muslims, always use this prayer literally, it is so heartwarming.

Abraham would never ask Allah for redemption. Allah is not the God of Abraham. No one ever even heard of Allah until Mohammad invented him. Abraham was a jew who worshipped Yahuweh. He would have known that calling him anything but Yahuweh or Abba (daddy), would be uncceptable. Allah means "a god", not "The God". The Arabic word for "The God" is Illa. Mohammad was speaking to the demon Pazuzu. He even says himself that when he recieved his "visions", he wasn't sure whether he was speaking to God or a demon. You are right. There is only one form of redemption in Islam.....what the word Islam actually means: Submit or die.
Additional info: The ancient Hebrews never called God 'Jehovah' or anything starting with a J. The letter J or its sound wasn't used until the 1500s. Any name in the ancient world that we now spell with a J actually contained a Y sound. Therefore, Julius Caesar was Yulius Caesar, Jesus was named Yahushua or Yashua (Joshua). Also, many people asked for redemption in the bible. But the Bible and the Q'uran are NOT the same. The Hebrew God and the Islam god are NOT the same. God has only one name, and it is Yahuweh. If your name is Steve, why would people call you Bob? Across different languages, names remain the same. George Bush's name in spanish is not Jorje Burista, it's still George Bush.

Dude,I'm not going to bash Islam, but I will say this.Abraham was the father of Ishmael and Isaac.God chose Isaac over Ishmael and Ishmael was sent out to the east from Israel.See where I'm going with this. You could from a certain point of view call Ishmael the father of the Arab states. He has plenty of reason to be mad at God.Why not produce a religion that is totally opposite of Christianity.

interestingly Isaiah says that people longing for righteousness should look to Abraham as an example
and Moses said God promised a miracle child, Isaac and Abraham believed and it was counted as righteousness... Abraham belief in God doing this seemingly impossible thing at the time... having Isaac ... and he was counted righteous

2:128. Our Lord! And make us submissive unto Thee and of our seed a nation submissive unto Thee, and show us our
ways of worship, and relent toward us. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Relenting, the Merciful.

2:128 "Our Lord! make of us Muslims, bowing to Thy (Will), and of our progeny a people Muslim, bowing to Thy (will); and show us our place for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in Mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.
Tafsir:
Our Lord! And make us submissive, compliant, to You and, make, of our seed, our progeny, a community, a people, submissive to You (min [in the phrase min dhurriyyatinÄ, 'of our seed'] here is partitive, and is used here in accordance with God's above-mentioned saying My covenant shall not reach the evildoers); and show us, teach us, our holy rites, our ceremonies for worship or for the pilgrimage, and relent to us. Surely You are the Relenting, the Merciful: they asked Him to turn towards them, despite their [moral] impeccability, out of humbleness and in order to teach their progeny.

Because humans wrote these "holy" books. In this verse it seems they are trying to solidify control over the people.
