There are commercial products you can spray on the material to remove the odor. Then I would use a fabric cleaner on the spot also. Unless the odor is completely removed, kitty will pick up his own smell, and may spray the couch again.
But I'd ask "Why is Kitty spraying in the first place?"
Is he a Tom; a non neutered male? Get him fixed asap. He likely will continue to spray if intact.
Is he neutered, and still sprayed? Have any other animals been added to the family recently. Neutered male cats may still spray depending upon how old they were when neutered and/or how threatened their territory appears to them.
Is Kitty sick? A trip to the vet is worth it. If Kitty is healthy then his spraying is behavioral and there are ways to stop the behavior, particularly once the reason for the inappropriate behavior is discovered.
Good luck.

When it is not possible to remove the cover of your couch or chair upholstery, observe the following cleaning procedures to get the cat urine out: Use vinager.
Dab stubborn stains with a soft, clean white cloth or absorbent paper towel. If solvents are required, avoid applying them directly onto the stain, and pour it onto a clean cloth. Clean the stain using a circular motion working from the outside inwards. After removing the stain, dry immediately with a hand held hairdryer using a cool setting. Take care to direct the air stream first towards the outside of the area working inwards. Always be careful to rub any stains gently and to use a brush with soft bristles.
Or you can use this the second site...

You will need to have it professionally cleaned by a services that specalizes in removing pet odors.
Using Febreze and the like will only cover up the smell, but it will come back eventually. And if you don't have it removed completely, the cat will continue marking the same territory.
You may want to try Nature's Miracle or something called Urine Gone. Vinegar and water is good too, if you don't mind a vinegar smell around.
PS: Thanks for the Zero Odor tip "old cat lady". I may need to get some of that too!

I ordered some Zero Odor which I saw on a TV commercial. The stuff is also available through their website.
I had a couch where the urine had soaked down into the upholstery and I treated it with the Zero Odor. I was planning to re-treat and now I don't notice there is any odor. So I think the produce is pretty great and maybe you should try it.

yes you can use vinegar. but not straight up. you have to mix it with water. like half it with water and vinager. that can work also. you can also go to the store and get some spray that is for like pet odor's. make sure that is has on there neutralizes pet odor's. if it don't say that on there don't get it. it has to say it on there. that work's the best to use for it.you go over to like where the febreeze is. you might be able to go over to there carpet cleaner's stuff. it's inexpensive to get and it last's for awhile. don't use frebreeze that is no good for something like that. you should get the cat fixed. but even if you get the cat fixed after it has sprayed they still spray casue they know who to spray. but they don't do it as much. good luck.

Spray it with vinegar, let it dry and spray it again. Then spray it with a good fabric freshener.

You can't really take it out but what you can do is put clothes freshener where it smells the most and that should help a bunch.

Vet clinics usually sell really good products for problems like this. I recommend UrineErase if you can find it.
