Theres a much easier way than listed here (however i dont know how to change the direction of the accent, but it works for Spanish because the accent's direction doesnt mattter in Spanish :-P) hold control, and press the postrophe ( ' ) then press the letter you want the accent on, and let go of control.

Insert symbol:-
Go to Insert>Symbol and then select the font you're using. Scroll through the letters and symbols until you find the one you want. Click on it and then click INSERT.
If you need to use it a lot then you can use (or set) a shortcut key to save you opening the "Insert" menu each time
