It's the way your kitty can show you he's not happy with your absence. You didn't say how often you're gone, or the length of your stay. Kitty loves his human family, and prefers you not leave at all.
There is so much mis-information about cats. Cats may be of an independant nature, but they are very bonded to their human family. When you're gone, they can be stressed and fearful.
To stop the behavior, I suggest lots of attention and a few treats right before you leave.
Also leave some cloth, in kitty's bed, that has your smell on it. Material like flannel is great. You can keep the material in your bed, for a week or so, to leave your scent. Having your scent close by when you're not physically there will comfort Kitty.
Make sure whoever is taking care of Kitty while you're on vacation is a calm, cat lover, who will talk to Kitty in a soft, high voice. It would be great if the cat sitter would spend a little time with Kitty not just feed and leave.
And, when you come home, give Kitty immediate attention and lots of it.
Keep in mind Kitty misses you, so make the time apart as happy and secure as possible.

In front of the door? I don't think he's showing displeasure with you, I think he's scent marking. The big cat (you) is leaving the house and he's alone in his territory. He needs to defend it from other cats, so he's putting something stinky in the place where any other cat has to walk through to come in.
Visit your pet store and see if they have felaway or any other positive scent cat product. Using this can make the cat feel more secure and happy and reduce the need to take defensive measures, like leaving turd on the doorstep.

cause it know's you left. cat's can be pretty smart. if your gone for probably more then a day or 2 then they know. the cat is probably upset that you left it there all by it's self. so they get mad you. so they figure they will go in front of the door. it could be also a behavior problem.but it is more likely just doing it while you are on vacation then it's mad that you left it there by it self.it's lonely.

One of two things, either 1) he/she is mad at you and letting you know or 2) he/she is scared that you're leaving forever, so they start having odd behaviors for attention.
My cat does this as soon as he sees a suitcase being packed. What you can do is lay out something like a shirt with your smell on it, something you've worn recently, and put it where your cat likes to rest or sleep. It will give him/her some comfort.
Good luck.

Its his funny way of giving you a gift when you come back... no no no...
One, it leaves his smell there ( just like how it sprays your favorite couch ) to tell other cats or animals, " Hey.. the master is away... so that makes me king of this castle.. dont even think about coming in here."
Two. It could be mad at you for not taking him or her with you.
or its his second poop spot, and he needed a second place to go #2. Clean out his booda box! It's filthy!

Some cats will do this to let you know they were not happy with you leaving them. Your cat may feel stressed when you are away. Have someone come over to play with your kitty with food and this may help in the future.

Sounds like he's upset with you. Cats are smart, and they know the patterns. I had one who would climb into my suitcase anytime it came out. If I am gone for too long, I pretty much expect my cats to be upset with me for a time. It's a heck of a way to say "I love you" but that's what it is.

What about a vacation for your cat ? He probably needs one too with you guys. Pets do get angry when you leave them all alone. He/she is just protesting in a democratic way. Do take care of his/her needs. He/she just feels so lonely and upset. Loll !

Cats are extremely intelligent and communicate in different ways. This not a strange behavior because it's his way of communicating that he doesn't like you to be gone. My cat used to urinate in the bathtub whenever I forgot to scoop his catbox...his way of reminding me ;)

Kitty is mad at you. My cats act mad when I go away too. It's her way of getting back at you. She feels insecure and upset. I don't think it is anything to worry about...just that she is showing you some attitude and punishing you for leaving her.
