My son has adhd and started taking Iron tablets once a day because I heard that iron defficiency is sometimes a reason for the cause of ADHD. My son tried a low dose and swears it helps him focus better in school.

Be VERY careful he isn't taking too much iron. But as long as he isn't taking too much, if it works for him, thats great! I suspect that with some of these natural cures, the only cure is in the mind. But if it works, why should we care HOW it works.

Some natural cures have real benifits. Some have psychosomatic benifits & some do nothing. Some can actually be harmful. INVESTIGATE. Don't just assume natural is best. after all, poison ivy is natural.

BTW - I take ginko for concentration, glucosamine for joint pain, & every evening I take calcium, Vit E & melitonin to help me get to sleep.

You made some comments & asked questions on the last Q, then closed the Q & you aren't signed up for email or PMs so I couldn't reply.

"This is to Smart Cat.... You sound as though you work for the government or the pharmacutical companies the way you are going so strong about this."

I do not & never have worked for any pharmacutical company. But I work intensively with my autistic niece & have gotten interested in the subject. And the facts seem to clear thimerisol as the cause of autism. Have you looked at any of the facts I sited?

"If there are natural cures out there are you saying that chemicals are better than what god has given us?? OH don't tell me you don't believe in god either...."

Yes I believe in God. God also gave us brains. Whenever a doctor wants to prescribe something for me, I investigate natural remedies to use instead of the prescription. Or maybe with the natural remedies, the dosage can be reduced.

High Cholesterol for example. My mom's cholesterol is like 475 without medication. She diet & nutritional suppliments could only lower that number to just under 300. But if she goes on a high fruit & fiber, low meat & dairy diet she may be able to reduce how much of the meds she will need.

I'm glad you found something that helps your son (as long as he doesn't take too much) but I doubt iron defficiency is THE reason for ADHD. There can be many causes and what works for one person might not work for another.

Counseling can help some. Various nutritional suppliments can help in others. Medication (keep dosage small) may be the best in some cases.

Treat the child like an individual, not a "condition."

A lack of iron does not cause ADHD. A lack of iron causes anemia which can create fatigue, irritability, dizziness or lightheadedness.

If it helps him and his doctor says its okay, keep him on it. But it really has nothing to do with ADHD. BTW Taking iron pills and calcium-rich foods at the same time mean less iron is absorbed.

Talk to your doctor about your son and what you can do for him. The internet is full of people who swear something "cured" or hurt them, and they believe it. But just because two things happened at the same time or right after each other does not mean they had anything to do with each other.

Vitamin defeciencies can be the precurser for all kinds of health and emotional imbalances. Many families are not aware that a poor diet can create health issues that are difficult to recognize or diagnose. Chef Boyardee out of the can is not a healthy meal. Growing adolescents need FRESH vegetables and fruits for the minerals and fiber that they contain. Candy, soda, and kool aid can be the worst enemies when you are trying to help a child with emotional imbalances becuase they only CONTRIBUTE to the problem! Good lucj

My son has ADHD and it is not from iron deficiency. ADHD is caused by a chemical imbalance. Low levels of Dopamine make concentration and focus very difficult with low levels also associated with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He may need iron but it doesn't have anything to do with ADHD. Before giving Iron drops, have his levels tested first. Please do not assume that your son is focusing better because of iron. Also, please don't listen to people who know nothing about ADHD. Listen to the people who raise or live with ADHD. Not people who think its a big conspiracy. They know nothing.

I personally do not accept the so-called ADHD BS that emerged from the pharmaceutical industry in order to control the natural behavior of young boys via drugs and or vitamin/mineral supplements for reason of making themselves fortunes... thus you should be very cautious regarding giving your son iron, it can cause other problems, I suggest that you make sure he is eating healthy, getting plenty of exercise and sleep...

no. Iron can be harmful if overused. Seek a dr.'s help immediately. He probably thinks it's helping due to mind over matter. I bet if you switched him to pez and told him it was iron, he'd say the same thing.

There are a lot of articles out there that say this is a good treatment. Certainly unless you OD on iron this is a harmless treatment. Thanks for the tip!
