I think modern society would cope much better than when that radio show was originally broadcast . We have more opportunities to get news so that wouldn't be fooled by one source alone.
If there was a real alien invasion society would fail very quickly and there would be mass panic and riots, This would be due to the electrical supply being disrupted, cars buses trains and plane not working and ultimately not knowing whats going on because thee wouldn't be anyway of finding out news..

Not a chance in Hell At least the Victorians equip ed there army with the equipment they needed, and sustained the manning levels required to meet the challenges of the day. Our present government would no doubt form a committee to discuss funding requirements. reduce troop numbers else were and tell us they were going to start a program of rearmament within the next few years . By which time we would be the content of a Martian lunch box.

Sorry, War of the Worlds is a book. The people had warnings that they ignored (most of them) and when things did start to happen it was so isolated that really there wasn't much of a threat to anyone but the British. In today's society with instant communication a sneak attack like what was written would be impossible.

If there was an alien civilization who wanted to invade us we wouldn't stand a chance - they would have to be phenominally advanced in order to even arrive at Earth, so they would have weapons we could never dream of, and ways of disarming or deflecting ours - it would be like trying to explain a machine gun to someone from the middle ages, and then trying to get him to disarm it or use tactics to neutralise it - they wouldn't stand a hope.

We just have to make sure we have good flu viruses ready to defeat them. That short-rs Tom Cruise didn't do much against them in his remake.
