Quoted from Elton John on his desire to ban all religions because they created hateful lemmings. I am not familiar with the term.

Lemmings follow one another to the point of jumping off of a cliff. He may feel that religions create a bunch of followers who think not for themselves to the point of hating because the other guy is doing it.

A lemming is an animal which, with other lemmings, migrates into the sea and is drowned. In other words, we continue on our own way even though we are headed for destruction.

A lot of other people than religious people do this, of course.

I am guessing that a "hateful lemming" is a person who hates what the rest of the group hates only because the group hates it. Hating out of herd mentality. A lot of people out there hate gays but do not really know any or have any real reason to hate them other than their religion hates them.

Look at your average Christian. They spread hate and intolerance and research almost nothing for themselves. They just follow what their preacher tells them.
