No one likes telemarketers... whether they're calling to sell you something, ask for donations, or whatever... So, why are they still around? I can't name one person who actually likes receiving these phone calls.

Same with junk mail from the US postal service & your local internet provider... Who falls for this crap? Who welcomes it? Why do people still generate it, especially the snail mail?

Isn't this just a giant waste of resources, time, & money?

Why does it continue?

There are people out there that fall for the sales pitches and buy. So the telemarketers still making loads of money.Congress has estimated that telemarketing fraud alone may be a multi-billion dollar-a-year industry.(1) The FTC's recent experience supports this estimate. The nearly 100 federal district court cases brought by the agency between October 1995 and December 1996 cumulatively reflect that fraudulent sales in these actions cost consumers more than $250 million a year

Bottom line, as long as it works - it will still exist. There are enough lonely people that still get excited to talk to someone on the phone even if it is a telemarketer.

There are also enough people that love their junk mail, mind you it is not us who barely have time to find the bills amongst it, but some enjoy reading through and seeing what is out there in the world - it is their only access.

However, I do think that the US Post Office could do a great service to themselves and us by raising the cost of bulk mailings and reducing that of personal letters!

When you compare these two advertising methods to others, you'll find out these are the cheapest with only a small percentage of people required to sign up or buy the product to gain a return on the campaign.

Plus with direct marketing they can target you specifically so in theory a company should generally send you mail for a guitar if you have shown intrest in it before. This helps to increase the percentage of people signing up and can be more effective than other methods of advertising.

it does seem a waste when there's such opposition, but don't think it will ever go away...
