Well you can get the GameCube from Nintendo. They have a lot of games there that kids like such as MarioKart, Mario party, Pikman, Animal Crossing, The Sims, etc... Most of those games should be around $20 now. They have a lot of games based on what movies are out too so they can play games of movies that they like.
You can also get a PlayStation 2, the price has gone down a bit because of the new PlayStation 3 (which is around $500-600) and that's too expensive, for me at least. There are tons of games you can play that are around $20 too not to mention the fact that these games can also be played on-line with other people like Socom I, II, and III.
If you go to BestBuy, they have a lot of inexpensive games and also at Walmart in a bin with a whole bunch of games. Hope this helps, good luck!

All of the game consoles that are coming out (PS 3, Wii, etc) are going to be exceedingly expensive and difficult to find. I believe only 400,000 PS3's are being released first production run in the USA, and there may be significant issues with backwards compatability the last I heard. Toys-R-Us and Gamestop and such only accepted 10 preorders each store, base price of roughly 600$, and Wii will be roughly 300$. Stick with an XBox 360 or something of that nature if you want on the cheaper side.

If your kids are used to Game Boy then you should get them a Game Cube which is also made by Nintendo, so then they will be familiar with the characters and games. they have plenty of assortments of games and is at a reasonable price that wont break you. And the good thing about it is that you can get a certain device that you can attach the game boy games to and play it on the Game Cube. Another good thing is that its cartridges not discs that way the kids cant scratch it.Good Luck on your decision, and I hope your kids have a lit up happy face come Christmas morning.

Ok... You don't want a Wii which is only $250, but you don't want to spend insane amounts of money? If you want to get a next gen console then you're SOL. The Xbox still costs upwards of $300 and the PS3.. well... the PS3 is an investment to put it lightly. If you wanted, you *could* get them both a Gameboy DS and a game like Dogs, or the Brain Academy series. Or you could try getting a PSP, but they're still expensive and don't offer many games I'd give to a 10 year old.
Another reason you're SOL is you're unwilling to stand in line. TOUGH COOKIES. If you don't want to stand in line, don't want to spend any money, and don't want a Wii you won't be getting any system this Christmas. - Unless you want a PS2, XBOX, or a Gamecube.

My son loves his x-box 360. He saved his money for months to buy it himself. ( he already had a ps2). It was the must-have system last Christmas, so you don't have to stand in line, they have worked out the bugs, and the price isn't as bad as the ps3. You can get the full system, with wireless remote for about $400. You can get the base system for $300., but it doesn't have a hard drive, which is necessary to save games. Now that the ps3 is coming out, you can probably get good deals on the ps2. My younger son love the game guitar hero, for the ps2, and there are tons of other games available for the ps2. Hope this helps!

The Nintendo Gamecube. Its only $99. Your oldest child is 15, and that is a girl. Okay, girls dont really care about all those graphics like boys, and they are only 9 and 10, they just want a video game to play.

The DS Lite is an excellent option, it offers innovative gameplay, and portability, which is very handy. The Wii is promising innovative gameplay. You may be surprised that you may find yourself playing alongside your kids if you get the Wii.
Nintendo in general is perceived to be more kids and family friendly in terms of games, but really, you can find good games for all systems. I would recommend the X360 or the Playstation 2 as well, but these systems may not have as many games for your young kids.

If you are buying this for kids the only option really is anything by Nintendo. Nintendo prides itself on being kid friendly. The Wii is a bit advanced so maybe the Gamecube or even something older. The Xbox and Playstation are for older players, the games tend to be more violent and agressive. Nintendo has more games that are animated and simple to play.
