Because getting rid of the Taliban was never the goal. Removing them from power and turning Afghanistan into a nation where democracy prospers is, since only by doing that can terrorism be undermined. There will always be crazy people in the world, but by creating a free society America is setting up the means by which nations can combat the taliban, or any other terrorists, on their own.
As a side note, we weren't defeated in Korea; S.Korea still exists, this goal achieved. In Vietnam, we would have won except that the American people lost their determination and thus sacrificed the lives of our allies in Vietnam.

This is a 'the US can't win no matter what" question, isn't it?
Well, lets think about this. You didn't mention World War 2, there are still Nazis running around. How about the cold war in general, there are still communists running around. And what about Gulf War 1, Sadam survived it.. oh wait, we did get him after all... but, his baath party is still around....
You get my point? Winning a war is stabilizing the peace when all is said and done. This isn't so easy. Korea, peace was established through a cease fire. South Korea still exists. Vietnam? It would have been nice to have that opportunity before Congress pulled funding bent over to some loud mouths who didn't understand the result of 'just pulling out.'
War doesn't end with nice tidy little bows and everyone holding hands and singing in the streets. In fact, after major actions are taken, such as those in WW2, Iraq, and Afghanistan, it takes time and effort to put things back together again and stabilize the country's security and governments. Took Germany 14 years and Japan 7 years following World War 2. Korea is still uneasy, but they haven't given up and things have been prospering in the south for over the past 50 years.
So, today we are on years 4 and 5 with Iraq and Afghanistan. So you mean to tell me, you expect some magical wand to make it nice and wonderful over there in a shorter time frame than any other conflict in history? Come on, stop jerking people's chain.

It's because they are not. It's just that the press hates Bush so much that they would go to great links to lie to bash Bush.
First there is no Taliban base in Afganistan. Second, the Taliban have no structure so anybody could call themselves Taliban, even three 12 year-old nerds. Mostly thieves and drug dealers call themselves Taliban to bost their image when facing drug dealers from other countries. Basically, "If you cross us, the Taliban will hunt you down." Third, the people calling themselves Taliban are coming from Pakistan in small numbers. From their newly issued clothes, they seem to be new recruits and not the old guard. Remeber, NATO sweeps don't seem to find more than 50 guys in several square miles. It's not because they hide well, it's because there just isn't a lot of them at any one time.
The U.S. never lost in Vietnam. The U.S. pulled out at least a year before Vietnam actually fell. There was no U.S> soldiers to defend South Vietnam when it fell.

For the same reasons the Russians didn't win in Afghanistan. These people are living an ancient lifestyle, a warrior's life and they will fight to the death anyone who invades. The moderates that Kazari represents are a minority. A small minority. The rest of the country is medieval in nature. We are fighting the same folks who kicked the British out in the 19th century, the Russians out in the 20th century. We can kill them but they keep coming back. The problem with wars like this is these people don't fight the way we are trained to fight. That is part of the reason for the outcome in Vietnam. More bombs were dropped on Vietnam than in both theaters in WW 2 (excluding Hiroshima and Nagasaki, of course) and they just kept coming and dying. I fear the same is true of Afghanistan.
We would have been much better off going in specifically to tear up OBL's folks then get the hell out. With OBL's head on a stick. The idea of a conventional war there...
We didn't lose Korea. The UN did not want to go toe to toe with the Chinese and we were part of the UN force.

The taliban are still here in limited numbers. They have basically been reduced to a non effective fighting force. Their own people turn them in to us on a daily basis. Read a history book. The US and NATO forces pushed the North Koreans, Chinese and Russian forces back above the 38th para. That was the stated goal at the beginning of hostilities. We achieved that goal. We beat the massive Chinese Army, we cleared the air of Russian Migs and reduced the North Korean Army into almost non existance. US forces never lost an offensive in Vietnam. Political loss? Maybe.
Russia was in Afghanistan for 9 years with 10 times the current coalitions forces and got their butts handed to them on a daily basis. Many of the problems we face in Afghanistan today are because they still remember the Russians. Killing civilians, destroying entire villages. Poisoning water supplies, Killing live stock, burning corps. Raping women and girls. After all that its no wonder we have trouble here. There isnt' a lot of trust of outsiders. But its building on a daily basis. The taliban are still trying to stop the progress of the country but they aren't that effective.

With the overpopulation here in US you'd think that more than 1/2 of 1% of the people would want to join in to help combat these warlords. So before anyone downs the Pres, or the troops for failure watch Glenn Beck tonight for insight on WHAT the ENEMY actually IS.

Never. As the war progresses and we go out on our patrols, we gain new allies with the youth of the nation, and make new enemies with the same youth.. Some get pissed off at what we do in their neighborhoods, and others love us.. It all depends on the soldier who is out and making that connection with the locals.. If he is a basturd, then the outcome is simple they will hate us and fight for the taliban.. If the soldier out on patrol is compassionate and kind, then they will love us and fight with us...

Why are cockroaches still plaguing South Florida after years of eradication programs? Same thing. Just think of the Taliban as cockroaches and keep spraying them with RAID.

The taliban are like rats, even after a nuclear blast, those are the two rodents that still survive. And don't forget that they are also raising their babies like that. Its an ongoing process and will never change.
