First, run away from the word "teacup" and anyone using it as it is a scam.
Go to www.akc.org and look under events for a dog show near you. Find out when the toy dogs will be shown and go. Unless it is a huge show (like Westminster) you'll pay a pittance for parking and then get in for nothing or next to nothing. The education you'll get will be enormous.
Walk around and just look. Check out the dogs and see what looks good to you. Most people only see their own dog breed and a few others like it and that's all they can tell you about. At a show, you'll get to see dozens of each breed at a time.
Read the stuff about going to a show on the AKC site before you go so you will understand how it all works and the best time to ask questions. When it is a good time, ask people about their dogs. Someone who really loves and knows a breed will tell you the good and the bad things about their breed and help you decide if it is for you.
If you can't go to a show, call dog trainers, the local SPCA/Humane Society in your area and ask them about breeds. They can talk to you about your lifestyle/needs in detail and help you better than we can

Best wishes

Like everybody else said, don't buy anything called "teacup"- It's just a way to charge more money for dogs that come with multiple genetic problems..Really, you should research the toy breeds to see which fits your lifestyle the best. Try this little quiz, just for fun..It might give you an idea. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/searchcategories.htm
I am partial to Yorkies, partly because I had my little girl Yorkie for 15 yrs and just lost her a few months ago..I miss her terribly, she was the sweetest, most personable little dog. Just the right mixture of loyalty and a bit of independence..They are wonderful dogs, but will readily take over the house and become tyrants if you let them...They do need reminded who really is boss:) Here's a couple sites about them:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire_Terrier

Don't touch what is considered "teacup". You are headed for heartache with the genetic problems these so called designer pups come with.
Look under AKC.org .Look through the toy breeds and check out what type of characteristics each breed has and what you can live with.
Research before you buy.

I have two Yorkshire terriers. They are adorable and very loving and energetic. Just be sure to find a good breeder, because the smaller the dog, the more expensive and some people will take advantage of you with sick or unhealthy dogs.

shih tzu - just don't buy from someone that breeds them as show dogs unless you want a skittish dog that you can barely pet and won't play
