It's called twin beds because there are TWO of them...

You book a room and you can specify, or be given...
Single = one single bed
Twin = two single beds
Double = one double size bed
King = one king size bed

You can also get a queen size bed though they are not so common.

A single is wider than the twin. I think the theory behind the twin bed is that they could be used separately or two of them could be pushed together to form a larger bed. The order of size is twin, single, queen, king. The mattresses are all the same length unless they are specified as being long but they differ in width.

hi,

a single bed is just a single bed. A twin bed are 2 single beds put together. a double bed is one big bed of the size of 2 twin beds put together. a double king-size bed is one big big bed. Usually you have a choice at the hotel for a double or twin room. The twin room has got 2 single beds (put together or not), in a double room there is only one double bed (unless there are twin beds with one big matres on them)

Well, its easy. If you travel alone you will want a single bed.
If you travel with a friend you do not want to share a bed
with you ask for a twin. If you are an older couple for instance, who do not want to share the same king sized bed (snoring etc.) you want to reserve a doubled that means maybe one bed with two mattresses or two beds together.
