The first last name recorded in Europe is O'Clery in 916 A.D. It is recorded in the Irish Historical Records. The ancient Romans used "cognomen" to identify themselves, much earlier than this.
We usually refer to them with only the last name (cognomen), such as, Marcus Tullius Cicero, who we call Cicero, or Gaius Julius Caesar, who we call Caesar.

A surname is fairly recent in human culture. I think you should look to China if you want such an answer. Even there it would be more of a tribal thing when one goes very far into the past. I have learned genetic tests show most of the European population is descended from only seven men....so....my own last name is Celtic in origin and means "lives by a brook". Hi!

Not sure but it is most likely something relating to being somebody's son. For example in Irish or Scottish names the 'Mac' which is very common means son of. So MacDonagh means Donagh's son. Or in English: Johnson. This practise is still used in Iceland today where people don't have surnames and are named as their father's child.

Julius Caesar lived during 140 b.c., Caesar is a surname. Brutus was the surname of the assassin who killed Caesar. Surnames would go back farther than that I would imagine.
