Read things that are interesting to the child. Read with him, and make sure he sees you reading on your own. Let him know that reading if fun, he can use his imagination, have him draw pictures about the stories. Then put the name of the book on the pictures. You can look at the pictures later and/or put them on the refrigerator. Not forget to have him help you send pictures to Grandparents, Aunts,Uncles, Godparents, whomever. Let him know how proud you are of him.

First of all, how old is he? They key is finding something they are interested in and reading with them. If you start at a very young age they will appreciate it, but for older children it is harder. I would start by forcing him to pick out a book and you guys read it together. Talk about the book and imagine about the book, make it fun for them and engage their imagination. Hopefully this will start a love for reading. My parents never read to me and i hated reading in school and never did it at home. Now i am trying to start this with my son as well, but he is 9 months old so we are just at the point where we look at them and i pray he does not rip all the pages out. I hope i helped, good luck.

First of all, setting an example is the best way. Having him see you reading books and truly enjoying it will definitely plant the seed. You can also make reading a habit in your home. If he's not too old you could read to him before bedtime. If he is too old for that you could simply provide books that tap into his interests, or take him to the library and encourage him to take out books that he would like to read.

Not only read to them, which is the best idea...but tell them stories. Allow them to use their imagination. My dad use to tell us stories before we went to bed to heighten our imaginations...also caused some nightmares...make sure they are not too scary :)...it gave me the desire for adventure, fantasy, and mystery. Read these kind of books to them and get them excited about a fun series of books. (depending on age, Magic Tree House can be a good series) Even if you read them to him. Also for older ages, you can do series such as "Redwall" By Brian Jacques, (He has some books on tape where he reads them, they are absolutely wonderful! He does all the different voices and makes it so much fun...he is a story teller for the blind over in Liverpool England) or even the "Narnia" series by CS Lewis if they are in middle school or up. Books on tape can be a lot of fun and help gain an interest as well...if your voice or time cannot permit. Reading is such a great way for them to learn reading and writing and spelling and grammar...I know, I am a 4th grade teacher. :) Good Luck and happy reading!

Litter the home with literature. We get the newspaper daily and we give our daughter her own section to 'read'. My husband and I will read the sections we like and then let her have those too. My husband and I each get magazine subscriptions and when we're done reading the magazine we give it to her. We'll scan junk mail and then give it to her. Sometimes I'll read from the newspaper and magazines to our daughter and my husband will read from the Bible to her. She has TONS of books and when I read them I will read them as if I'm being filmed for acting school. Lots of expression and acting out the pages. She LOVES it.

Let him see you reading for information and for pleasure.

Take him to the library and help him pick out books. Read to him every day.

Don't just read too him, but read WITH him to help encourage literacy. Take turns reading every other sentence/paragraph/page.

comic books, especially of recent super-hero movies. Great way to get a child reading.

Write something...short stories about you, your family, your pets, your home, etc. Type it up, make the cover of it have a picture of something he is familiar with, maybe even him/her. Make it fun for him to learn about you/himself...just a thought.
