I would like to buy my boyfriend a nice gift and I know he likes knives, I have bought him a Henkle Santoku something I don’t know it was one 5 inch knife for like $80 so it better have been good, he said he liked it and it was very good. Anyways I would like to buy him something to sharpen and hone the knife. Also was thinking maybe buying him another knife. What would I buy that is very good quality for sharpening and honing and where would I find it. Plus what would be another knife he could get a lot of use? He loves to cook. I just want to buy the right thing and I will spend a bit of money but like say no more than $120 for both. We live in Orlando, FL. Thanks so much I have no clue with kitchen stuff.

Buy him a 8" or 10" Chefs knife. A Henkle or Wustof or Gerber, Profinox, Even a Victorianox knife will do.
As for honing and sharpening, you need tobuy him a steel...that is a long metal pole with a handle that you use to maintain the sharp edge. You can buy fine to coarse ones, I find that a medium grit one will do.
As for sharpening the knife, this take a lot of practice and beleive it or not but you can actually ruin the knifes edge if you don't know what your doing. Talk to your knife supplier about the different types of honing stones that are out there. A diamond based one is the best, but they tend to be costly.
Have fun cooking, and remember a sharp knife is a safe knife.

For that price, you can get the 8" chef knife and the 10" steel in the same line and brand. These are quality basic cutlery for all to have and is within your budget.
As for shapening, a simple basic two way stone is under $20. But the skill in sharpening high carbon knives will require practice. It's best to just send it to a knife shop for professional sharpen every 6 months or so.

any good quality knife is easy to sharpen if you take time and patience, buy a carbon stone these should not be very expensive and only require that you place a little light oil on it as a lubricant and then slowly draw the knife edge backwards and forwards keeping the knife edge almost flat on the stone always remember to turn the blade over every few strokes so that both sides are sharpened and to add oil as needed

OK so my father has been sharpening knives for about 15 years he is the only certified person to do so in the state of RI. I know there must be machines that are small he could use but they will never be as sharp as in the beginning if you don't have the right tools. I would just suggest when they need to be sharpened going to a knives sharpener and having them do it.

go to e-bay and let him choose the knife and sharpener---wife just did that for my birthday-----perfect present
i know i'll catch hell from some,but some of the higher end knives are over rated for the price

forschner knives are the best knives to buy for the money.
you can spend more but you dont have to.

Go to your local sporting goods store and ask them for some advice. They will be able to help you out with the right stone, etc. for what you need.
