My husband puts my three-year-old daughter in “time out” for picking her nose and eating it. I’m trying to think of other gross things that people do that ARE social acceptable, like smoking or burping (in some countries). Can you think of any?

As for eating it, I’d rather her do that than wipe it on the couch. OBVIOUSLY a tissue is best, but why is nose picking/eating SO BAD (aside from the whole germ thing)?

I heard somewhere it helps boost the immune system. I don't think I will punish my kids for it because most kids and some adults do it. Like another taboo subject (Masturbating) I will teach them not to do it in public and to always wash their hands when they do. If they are consuming their own germs that are already in their body, who does it hurt? Is it better to to eat mucus or bugs? I have three siblings and we all ate something strange when we were little. We did not die, we all grew to be healthy adults who can pick on each-other over Christmas dinner about eating roaches, mud-pies or poop. Think of it this way, it's just mucus. It could be much worse.

My wife picks her nose consantly....its cute.

Probably gross becuase, as a generalitly placing our fingers in any of our holes and removing substance, spreads germs (normal flora, bacteria, viruses, mucous, etc..).

Germs can cause infections which will reduce a persons fitness (used in a darwinian way). So I would imagine that an aversion to nosepicking has an evolutionary benefit.

Considering pickin your nose as GROSS....provides evolutionary fitness!

That and.....its just gross!

You may be surprised to learn that scientists have discovered that picking your boogies and eating them is good for you. They say it strengthens your immune system. Also, whether you realize it or not, you swallow a quart of your own mucous everyday as it slides from your nasal passage down the back of your throat. And there is nothing you can do to stop it.

That is gross, seriously and do think about germs. Kids need to learn manners starting when they are very young. Do you want to see her at her wedding, standing at the altar, picking her nose and eating it?

Aside from telling her to do it when no one is looking, explain to her it' s the dirt your nose hairs catch, and do you want mommy to make you eat a dirt pie?
