Since no one can agree on what sin actually is, is the "sin" theory of Jesus's death just conjecture?

palavar - please pardon my clumsy choice of words. Somehow, people seem to be getting the gist of my question. Thank you so much for pointing out my flawed communication skills.

I'm blown away no one can agree on what "sin" is. How is it not "going against the will of God"? As to the "sin theory", I'm not sure I am familiar with it, but what I do know is Jesus was perfect, and through his suffering in Gethsemene and on the cross, he made it possible that mankind can overcome the effects of sin.

Sin is anything that is done againts the word or laws of God which is layed out in the KJV bible. Anything that is unrightous in the eyes of God, and goes against Him is a sin. Not agreeing with this will not change the fact that it is what the meaning of sin is.

Just because the act of sex out of marriage according to God is a sin, and the majority of this world does not agree that is is a sin, doesn't make it any less a sin in the eyes of God. It is God's defination of what a sin is that we are judged by Him is. Not what mortal man considers a sin.

I missed your previous question but I can give you a biblical definition of sin. "Sin" literally means "to miss the mark" or "wander from the way". The question is, what is the mark we are to aim for and/or what is the way? You have to go back to the beginning of the bible to get the definition of that. The mark or way are the laws of God. If you look up the definition, the idea behind the word sin (Chata in hebrew) is that of an archer shooting at a target, again the target is the law of God. If you miss the target you have sinned.

Read Isaiah 53:10, which blatantly tells us the Messiah would die to atone for our sins.

Here's the Biblical definition of "sin," I'm not sure why you didn't get this when you asked about sin awhile ago:

1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Disagreement in the present does not equal a conjecture about a past event. If you are determined to foray into theological territory, I suggest you moderate absolute phrases such as, "no one can agree." Such a choice of words is clumsy and would discourage serious people from taking your question seriously.

Kathryn B,there are four levels of awareness that I see. Ignorance,Law,Grace,Unity with God. One living in ignorance of God is innocent. When one becomes aware of the law of cause an effect (karma) then one must cross this bridge of law to enter into Grace. At some point in time and space one will meet ones true GURU, teacher, who will baptize them with spirit, lifting them into a state of Grace, living above the law, having fulfilled it.No more a sinner by virture of unity with God in unconditional love. Jesus is NOT the only saint who has the power of baptism with spirit. With millions of words and adequate space i would tell you what i have ommitted. LOVE Duality & desire separate one from God. unity awareness lifts one out of this dillusion.

If you read the answers put forth in your last question, they are consistent. Everyone seems to think of sin as the same thing. You make it sound like no one agrees on what sin is, and you are flat wrong. Therefore your questions are obviously meant only to incite anger and offense, or to try to put forth your "theory" rather than meant to seek true answers. Please read what others wrote before accusing everyone on disagreement.

Sin is what goes against God- It is the "wrong doings" in God's eyes. It is filth. Sin is the opposite of Holy- Sin is the opposite of perfect. And our flesh is sinful. But those who believe in Christ Jesus are being renewed each day--by forgiveness through His blood. He is faithful to forgive our sins. Sin is impurity- it is not clean. Look at God's Law- the 10 Commandments- if you have broken any of them, that is sin.

So its the "yuckiness" in our hearts- the filth- the wrong-
and it goes against God. For God is holy, perfect and just.

Psalm 51:2
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Jeremiah 33:8
I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me.

Ezekiel 36:25
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.

there are a wide range of sins. You will never get everyone to list them all. It is not like 31 flavors...read your bible and you would have an idea of your own.
