PLEASE READ THIS!!! I seriously had the exact same problem. took my car in two weeks ago and as i started explaining the problem the guy said, "Oh yes let me guess, the check coolant?" He said that it is NOT really a problem it is a factory fault and after a couple on thousand miles it packs up and just warns you that your temp is not right. BUT when you look at your temp its fine right? you have two choices. you could have them replace your radiator or you could just ignore it. ITS REALLY NOT A PROBLEM!
P.S I didnt want to spend the money to fix it so i just choose to ignore it;)
Good luck!!

It is definitely a temperature sensor, but it could also be linked to the coolant level, not just the temperature alone. Check that also, as most cars will still maintain an acceptable operating temp even when they are a little low on fluid. If you have an overflow bottle, then it probably is indicating just that. You also may consider that some cars have an oil temperature sensor as well. Check your oil level also.

your coolant level in the overflow bucket is low, there is probley
a float as part of the cap with two wires running off of it. and the low coolant is setting off the lite. With aluminem heads and blocks, overheating one of these motors just once will cause serious damage and vw wants you to be aware of coolant level. not just temperature

Coolant level sensor. It's saying the coolant is low. Is a common part to fail so you may not be low but need to replace the switch.
