2000 years ago, Jerusalem was most definitely not the most important city on Earth. One could argue for any empire capitals in China, Persia, Rome, India and would probably be right. So it seems logical that a god would have chosen the very center of an empire to manifest its son. A present day's equivalent of ancient Jerusalem would be like Asuncion in Paraguay, quite insignificant in political stakes. Does that not smell fishy to you? Strategically, if you want to make a change and you're a god, you don't need to go low profile, you strike at the head where it hurts. Having manifested itself in Israel, does that mean that jews are more important to god than any other group on the planet? There's no peace between the people that live there but it's a fight that is not as important as a superpower conflict for example. So where is the catch?

Obviously, as the earth is round it doesn't have a centre (I mean, not on the surface) but Jerusalem is pretty close to the centre of the three continents known at that time by all the great civilisations and empires, and for another 3 000 years after the Jews set up their temple there. Where else gives such access to Asia, Africa and Europe? Even today, culturally and geographically, it's still pretty much where it's at.

And God does use small and apparently insignificant things and people to accomplish great things, especially in the long term.

He did choose the Jews as a special people, not because they're better than anyone else or for anything they did, but for a special purpose and to bless Abraham through his offspring as promised, because of Abraham's great faith. God's purpose for the Jews was to show the rest of mankind what God is like and how to worship and obey Him, and to provide the human blood line for the great Redeemer of mankind, the Messiah (who we Christians know is Jesus). The Jews pretty much screwed up their mission and that's why the last two thousand years have been, in spiritual terms, the age of the gentiles, but God isn't fazed by this - He knew in advance what would happen and you can get an understanding of the whole God/Abraham/Jews/Jesus/Gentiles/ future of the Jews and Christians thing by reading the book of Romans, chapters 9, 10 and 11.

Try shooting this question at a christian and they'll probably just remark (if they're smarter than the average christian) that somehow this leads to god relying more on his people to have faith (and consequentially less on having sense)....
Afterall... its like the Spanish Inquisition: Nobody would expect it.... and apparently that makes it an awesome idea (one of the few consistancies through the bible: the plan that makes the least sense is the one most often chosen).

O'course... if you want to purge the concept of reason from your followers, making completely illogical choices every step of the way is a good means to encourage such.
However, if you reverse that, you quickly realise that monotheists have always been illogical, and made up illogical stories in the first place.

That suit you mr Hypercube?

It's probably got more to do with being close to the common man rather than starting in the middle of a sin city like Rome. Speaking of Rome, I don't understand Catholicism. It's the Roman Empire's version of Christianity, complete with it's structure of leadership, right up to the Emperor/Pope. Reminds me of those TV Evangelists that sit around in those plush gold chairs and tell you to send them money so they can get a new Rolls.

If you have already 'imported' a religion, then, get to know that the truth of and about the religion as are held, and passed on from generation to generation by the people who still live in and around Jerusalem, in Lebanon, Constantinople, Syria, Iraq, Jordan.. They are more authentic christians. In Arabic Bible, Allah is mentioned for thousands of time. But, in the West, it is an alien Name. Mistakenly, they love God, not Allah. Thus they belittle Christians in and around Jerusalem who love Allah, truly so.

Well as we can all see now, God didn't have to choose the very center of an empire.
If God wants to manifest his son, he can do it anywhere.

Yes actually. Jews were Gods chosen people, through their lineage Christ would decend.

Arent all religions generally an import from one place or another. America itself was founded, in part, to get away from religious oppresion, among other things. America itself IS an import, so naturally, any religion practiced here, would be to.

IF IT ISN'T IMPORTANT THEN WHY ARE THERE THREE MAJOR RELIGIONS FROM THAT EXACT CITY OF JERUSALEM? YES THE JEWS ARE GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE. YES ISHMAEL IS ABRAHAM'S SEED, BUT NOT THROUGH SARAH WHICH ISAAC COMES FROM AS WELL AS JESUS DOES. CHRISTIANS WERE GRAFTED INTO THE VINE AND ANY GENTILE CAN COME TO GOD THROUGH HIS SON.

And, by way of fact the controversy is warmer than ever, i won't overlook what Christ has executed for me. I have not have been given any could positioned on a pass. i do no longer positioned on a fish. i do no longer consume fish. i do no longer think of that Yahweh is a fish. apparently, Jesus would not have fins. i do no longer positioned on any symbols of any sort. I prefer that folk mean no longer something approximately me, even although i understand that they are going to intend. i do no longer prefer to pay attention on the subject of the esoteric which ability of all of those works of human hands. For me, they do no longer something whilst in comparison with what Christ has executed for me.
