It is a variable focal length lens. Originally most cameras had a lens single focal length such as 50mm for most 35mm cameras. You could buy a wide angle lens of 28mm or wider and a telephoto of 90mm or longer to cover different field of views.
Through the magic of optical engineering a single lens was built which could cover the focal lengths of a number of lenses.
You used to have to "zoom" with your feet now you can do it with a lens (sort of).

The word zoom is an example of onomatopoeia that indicates swiftness. It can also mean enlarging an area for better viewing using a lens or microscope (zoom in) or in digital photography where you can zoom in (increase the viewable area without affecting the size) or zoom out (decrease the viewable area without affecting the size)

It means that a lens, instead of only having one length, has a design that allows it to lengthen or shorten. This means that instead of having to walk closer or farther away to get less or more in the image area, you zoom in or out with the lens. Most people think of zooming in, but zooming out is also helpful, especially when you can't back up any farther.
