Does anyone else worry about why people choose to join the marines? In my graduating class there are a handfull of people who are going to be joining the marines, of them, at least half I'd say enlisted because they just want to kill. That kinda scares me to know that these people want to kill. To join the marines to defend the nation is one thing, but to join because you think it's going to be fun?
everyone is welcome to share thier opinions but please don't call me unpatriotic or label me anything. I am not against our military or country.

If you asked some of my fellow students why they wanted to join, they will say because you get to kill people. They arn't going to be killing in Iraq because they have to, but because they want to. And to the maniac thing, one of these dude's who comes to mind is, he goes around looking for fights all the time and jumps little kids for thier money, but he's been excepted.

They are trying to act like hard assesss.
Being a Marine is much more than that and they will soon find out when they get to Basic training.
Being trained to protect our Country at all costs is one aspect of what makes a true Marine. If you know any Marines, you will see it in their character, in the way they show respect, their discipline and dedication and commitment.
The Marine Corps is not for everyone and neither is the earned title of a US MARINE.

I had a friend in high school, and all he could ever dream about was joining the Marines. He didn't want to go kill people though; he signed up because he wanted to be one of the Presidential Guard- you know fly around on Marine One with the President.
He had to join the infantry for two years and then artillery for two years, if he was willing to stay longer, then they'd put him in the pool. He did.
Understand this: Whenever something is so hyped up by television commercials, marketing campaigns, and movies; people are going to want to become involved for whatever the said reasons are. The entertainment industry is built up as this huge glamorous business of multi million dollar penthouse suites and limo's, but in reality its tough as hell and most people wont do anything in it. Likewise, people join the Marines because its held up as the best of the best in the service. The first one's in and the last one's out, the tip of the sword, the few, the proud.
The difference between the entertainment industry and the Marines? When they say tip of the sword and best of the best; they mean it. I respect anyone willing to fight for a noble cause, and unlike many people in the world- I consider America by in large a noble country.

He's actually 100% dead on. It's why i joined the Marines, and why a lot of other people i know joined too, though almost none of us will admit it in public because people would think we're crazy, when we're just like everyone else. Now that doesn't mean that we want to just go outside and start shooting people, we're not (all) psychopaths, and i'm 100% capable of receiving, obeying, and passing on orders from my superiors, but it is something i and others still want to do eventually, much like eventually owning my own home, or have the Redskins win the Superbowl (snicker, snowball % in hell). I can't really explain why we want to; maybe there's some sociological, "blame it on the video games/suburban rage" kind of explanation, but i believe that it's just a built-in aptitude, just like being good at math, or being artistic, or wanting to fly. I've compared it to how many women have a desire to have a child, or create life. I think some guys 'naturally' want to take a life, like it's built-in instinct, or something. And in the end, if/when we get a chance to kill, we probably will end up regretting it, but the need for the experience is still present. You have to admit though; people like us are useful members of society. Some people just need to be killed for the rest of us to live our lives free.

Unpatriotic, maybe. Ill informed and delusional, absolutely. The Marines don't want people who want to kill. They want people who can follow orders and use their brains. My Grandson is in the Marine Security Forces. Right now he's guarding a nuclear submarine base in Washington Sate but soon he will be going to Iraq to train Iraqi Police Officers. He joined the Marines because he believes in the mission.

If you join the Armed forces your job IS to protect this country. Unfortunately that sometimes involves killing. In war you have to have a sort of "kill or be killed" attitude, while performing your job. You should be proud of them and thank them for going to protect you, your family, and this great country. I haven't heard anyone ask why terrorist want to fly planes into high rise buildings, but then we already know. They just don't like us. Therefore, "kill or be killed".

To be a marine is to be a member of the world's largest and most competent fraternity.
There are no ex-marines, only marines.

I think you are being to literal. First off, they are boys and are 18. They know that they are going into a war, most likely and are looking for a macho answer when the truth is that they are afraid.
So, tell them good luck, God Speed and to keep their head low.
