The Holy Grail is supposedly the cup used at the last supper when Christ performed the First Communion. The legend is that Joseph of Arimathea took the cup and collected Jesus' blood in it while He was on the cross. From there, the cup allegedly travelled to France or England where it disappeared into further legend. None of this has any Biblical authority and was made most famous by Sir Thomas Mallory in the Morte D'Arthur where the Knights of the Round Table searched for the Grail to heal the land. The Grail is rumored to have tremedous healing powers thanks to its contact with Jesus' blood. Several items lay claim to being the grail including the "Lee Penny", a small wooden remnant of a cup held by a minor British noble family that supposedly has healed people of nasty ailments when they drank water from it.
The entire problem with grail lore is that the cups and plates were used at an inn so they were rented and it is highly unlikely that anyone thought twice about grabbing a rented cup for historical purposes.

Well, it was made of wood in the Indiana Jones movie, but I am not sure that is historical fact. The holy grail is the "cup of Christ," the chalice from which he drank at the last supper, where he said this wine was his blood. That is the basis for the ritual of holy communion. The phrase has become a metaphor for an ultimate prize, something for which you search.

Holy Grail, in its earliest form in medieval legend, was a mysterious food-producing vessel. It was usually depicted as a dish or cup, or sometimes a magical stone. The Grail later became identified with the vessel of the Last Supper. Joseph of Arimathea used it to catch the blood of Jesus as He hung from the cross.
