My wife and I would like to renovate the apartment. I was wondering if we could save money if I did the contracting. Also, would the job quality sacrifice?

Yes you can do it yourself. But there are a few things to think of first.
1.) You may need a building permit for the work you are planning.
2.) Do you know enough about the type of work you are doing to ensure safety (Electrical, Plumbing) etc.
3.) You can "Sub-Out" some of the work to a sub-contractor which will cut out the "General Contractor" and the sub will have a vast knowledge of the work to be done. But you will be the one to oversee the project instead of the general contractor which will save you money.
4.) Home Depot has a great selection of DIY books to help you through the planning and the step by step process of remodeling.
5.) As for the quality - as long as you have some experience and the time to research the project, the tools required to do the job. You will probably come out in good shape. And there are a lot of resources you can tap into for help. And we will be happy to assist you too with any questions you may have... FREE

I'm a contractor and yes you can do it your self. Most of the subcontractors that you will hire, will tell you what they need before they can do their job. All a general contractors do is scheduling, getting the workers in and out so the next can come in. But never pay a full invoice until you know for sure that the work is done completely. You can go to a bookstore for information how to be your own contractor.
There are alot of shady contractors out their, so get references and check them. To be honest don't hire any friends, it might cause a strain on your friendship. All contractors should carry workers comp insurance and liability insurance, and by law they can not give it to you them selves, the insurance company has too, by fax or mail.
Most contractors can wait a few weeks to be paid, that will give you time to check there work, or have your inspections from the code department. If you have any questions about anything ask me, I don't mind helping a little. Good luck.

Why would you want to renovate an apartment, all you are doing is making it nice for someone else's benefit, when you move it's not like you will make your money back off of it, I say save your Money for a down payment on something that will be yours.

Sure, you can do it. Your work will have to be inspected to meet the city codes, and it will take longer, but there are plenty of books, websites, and stores that have help available.
