Do you have to "buy your way into heaven"?

2006-11-15 02:14:37 · 10 answers · asked by Anonymous in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

Because, My father lived in a bad area of town, and when they moved they stopped going to a catholic church in the bad area, when they wanted to bury my grandpa(RIP) the catholic church wouldnt allow it because they havnt went there for a while. Then my uncle(dads brother) had a child that died 6 months old. And the catholic church told my uncle, he died because of my uncles sins. This doesnt have much to do with buying into heaven, but I just wanted to make this clear,

No and to be honest it is the real reason why I think no "religion" has it right. All religions require you to give something to them, be it money or time, in order to be in good standings with the "church" but trust me God could careless what your standing is with the "church". And yes I am a Catholic but no I don't go to church anymore because I was tired of the hypocrisy of church.

No. I was raised Catholic and although I have turned away from the Catholic religion, Catholics do not "buy" their way into heaven. I can't understand what ever gave you that idea.

I am now a practicing Church of God member. I turned away from the Catholic religion because it was boring. The priests talk at you instead of to you. They live a sheltered life and have a hard time relating to the problems of their parishioners. Also, I have a BIG problem with the scandal of the molesting priests that they covered up for so many years and the many children's lives they all but ruined by keeping their dirty secrets.

The Catholic Church teaches that salvation is "a free gift of God that cannot be earned or merited". The Catholic Church did not tell anyone that anyone died because of their uncle's sins. That is absurd. As for the burial, why would you expect that a church would conduct a burial service for someone who effectively was not a member of that church? Would a Protestant church do that?

No. I was born Catholic, raised Catholic including 12 years of Catholic school and have and am sending 4 kids through also. I don't know where you come up with an idea of that but it is small minded and dangerously ignorant.
Broaden your thinking. If you are so interested why come on here and ask, why not explore a religions beliefs, no matter what religion you are interested in?

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

No, catholicism does not teach that you 'buy' your way into Heaven. Salvation, according to Catholicism, comes from Christ and Christ alone.
