In response to the folks who seemed to think he was doing it to set an example:

So what about the rest of the Old Testament? Was god setting an example by committing genocide as well?

No.... the truth of the matter is that the folks who wrote genesis were overly anthropomorphising their idea of a god (as often still happens) and somehow concluded that since humans have to rest after working, that somehow it was right for their god to do it too. Its even safe to say that the thought that he might not have to never even occurred to them. They just figured "If I'd just made the world, I'd want a rest" ... and pretty much stuck with it as canon.

Rested on the Seventh day? He has been resting ever since he sent his son to earth to be killed....I don't know if anyone notices this but God Hasn't shown himself for a very very long time...

Friend God does not need to reat, many religious teachings today thinks that God rested for 24 hrs, That is silly, Just like you said. God does not need rest, That 7th day was 1000 yrs, & what did it typed out, The 1000 yrs. Millennium. But right now until that 7th day which will be the millennium, Jesus Christ is our REST, didn't Jesus say, whosoever will let him come & I will give him/her REST

He rested on the seventh day because He knew that He already made everything for the world. Thats the reason why we have all the basic need (H20, Air ....)

Thats what the good ole book of confusion says. I do not take anything it says literally. Maybe it means that he just stopped working on the seventh day. He knows we were going to destroy his creation anyway so why continue to work.

God did this in order to set an example for us, He of course does not need the rest, but understands that we do of course, so he set the example by doing so for us.

He's lazy... sits around for all eternity, makes the World in Six days and then takes a rest...

Then, just as he thought he would have to go back to work running the World, he has a brainwave... he invents freewill and lets Man get on with it on his own while God goes back to resting.

God rested, because he was created in our image.

Harry Potter rests for much the same reason.

maybe it a mistake on the part of the person who "wrote" the bible, or maybe it is to acknowledge that Sunday is a day of rest and that it is a time where Christians should share and embrace there faith in God.

maybe he didnt need to but wanted to...he was setting a precident that you work 6 days and rest on the seventh, good example but it would have been kind of nice if he would have worked four and rested three ;)
