THE QUESTION ON HOW IT WORKS:

In war time, if the nation state does not have enough volunteers and career servicemen in the armed forces, the the government may, at will, issue notice that eligible male (usually male) MUST report to armed services duty.

The US, did away with the draft in 1973, and in 2004 created what is known as 'the all volunteer-army'. Though this contradicts the fact that US has imposed involuntarily reenlistment after voluntary service was completed. This has happened in both Golf Wars.

Though the draft is official done away with, the US has what is known as Selective Service System. This a a contingency system where young men are required to register in case the country ever needs to resume a draft.

There is no draft in the US. There is a Selective Service system that all males 18 and older must register for.
This is only designed to keep a register of men that COULD be drafted if a catastophic major war broke out that required a draft.

all 365 days of a year are placed in a drum, drawn, the first date is #1, if thats your birthday thats your draft number. They draw em all, then the draft starts, as many dates as they have to callup to get the number they need. Various deferments are used...student, surviving son, head of household etc.

What is with all the draft questions lately? Back in Vietnam men were drafted that were the age of 18 and older to fight in Vietnam- if they did not show up they were arrested, most fled to Canada to avoid the draft. We took young men, just out of high school, whose biggest problem at the time was whether a girl liked them or not, gave them little training and sent them over to Vietnam, dropped them out of a plane to run for their lives, kill other people, watch their friends die in front of them, lose legs, arms, and other body parts- a good majority of them came back with mental problems and got little assistance from the Government- it was an unfortunate situation that we learned from.. it would take a major catastrophe in order for us to reinstate the draft as mandatory. When a young man graduates high school they are still asked to fill out a draft card, if they are ever asked to serve it is voluntary, they will not go to prison if they refuse and they do not have to run to Canada-all the draft dodgers basically got a pardon in Clinton's administration and it would take a massive catastrophe before they ever reinstate the draft - don't hold me to the 100% info in my little statement.. I was not alive during Vietnam.. just stating from what I learned over the years in my own words :)

if they need it, they use it...end of story. And the US's policy on draft is valid.
