Figure out which station you want the hotel to be near, then look-up the station on Yahoo maps, and under the "Travel & Transportation" of the "Smartview" check the Hotels radio button. This will give you a list of hotels that you can look-up. You can also find decent prices for these hotels at Hotels.com.

Depending on where you want to stay you probably won't be far from a metro station. Many hotels also offer shuttles to/from the nearest metro in case it isn't close by.
I would check different websites for what is in your price range - - then look at the details of the hotels. In DC and northern VA they usually tell you how many blocks to the nearest metro station.

Typically, the cheapest rates can be found on the hotel chains' own web sites (like Choice Hotels, Holiday Inn, Hyatt, Hilton, and such). As another person wrote, most hotels are near the Metro. There are many hotels in Crystal City, right around the Metro, and these tend to be cheaper than the hotels in DC. Crystal City is right across the river, near the airport, so it's not inconvenient to get downtown. Also, there are hotels at stops around the Beltway that are much, much cheaper. With the Metro, it's easy to get into twon, so I think that it's worth it to take another 15 minutes to get downtown to save $100 per night.
