Originally the Quakers were a nonconformist and unconventional group of very zealous Christians who used to quake, shake or tremble in their meetings as if by the power and under the fear of God. They still sit in silence in their meetings with no-one preaching or leading. Any member can start to speak when he or she feels God leading them to do so.
Nowadays they seem to be focussed entirely on world peace to the exclusion of every other aspect of religion. Many of them are not Christian believers any more, but people with ethical or moralistic attitudes generally in the worthy, do-gooding, sandal-wearing, leftist, liberal mode. Not that I'm knocking this, but they don't seem to know whether they're a Christian organisation, or a political one, or just a social club for contemplative meditation, if there is such a thing.

A firend of mine and his wife just started attending a Quaker church. They are both atheists. They found that the Quakers were rather liberal in their acceptance of other ideas. During the service, there is no priest or preacher leading the service. Each indivual just stands up to say what is on their mind when they feel like it.
